Post Bach Invention Number 1
Hey there. Been working hard on this one for a while. I decided to play this rubato with more feeling. Some Bach interpretations are very rigid. Like Glenn Gould. Some much freer. I didnt want to sound like a machine so played with time a bit. One small mistake where i didnt hit a note when I wanted to but it worked out. And was having some weird distortion on a couple notes but Its not a performance going on a CD. Someday maybe. Want to learn all 15 Inventions. Started Number 2 and half way done it.

Hope you enjoy it. And this is my Merry Christmas present to you all.

Rob

Dude, great job! Thanks for sharing! Really enjoying the bit of watery/synthy verb you have adding some space to the notes.

Great! And you have the basis for a really good feel too, that is more important than a literal, note-for-note recitation.

Oh, that long breath and exclamation at the end was so perfect. Great job, seriously, this is no small feat and it made my holidays all the more merry! I played this piece at Stick Night last week - and OH how this piece will silence a chatty room! Give yourself some runway before performing to get the room ready if you know what I mean.

It has been my experience that the horizontal movement in the left hand is the greatest challenge to Stick players - the big 4th jumps are pedestrian for Bach - on a keyboard - but on a Stick, delivering this lyrical left hand melody without pause is the end game.

Phrasing, timing and delivery are all pretty spot on. When you do look at the board, it's at the left hand as this hand is doing all the horizontal movement. I especially enjoyed the accentuation used at 41, 43 and in the final run. Your Stick embouchure is solid, which is to say you are not falling short in the 4th extensions that are required of the left hand, and the right hand is working the vertical movement with proper placement behind the fret. My 2 cents would be to focus on transitions.

The transition before the measure 6 (0:22) is the one to beat - I'll just bet that was a milestone for you in your studies. I'm also certain you've nailed it many times without issue, but just not in this performance. The transition to measure this against would be :51 - flawless. Transitions at 1:21 and 1:28 were also really solid.

I'd love to hear how you recorded the piece as the quality is good.

Rob, you should be really proud of this one. You'll breeze through minuets after this one. Let me know if you want to step up to invention 8 or possibly jump in with me (perhaps Scotty too) on Invention 2. Invention 2 is a straight canon, so it's just follow the leader with the left hand in the lead.
