The Third Enigma live
So I tried recording my last gig (audio and video) on my MacBook Pro... video quality is just average with the iSight but the audio quality seems pretty good. It also demonstrates the sound of the POD HD 500 setup I'm now using for effects.
This is my most ambitious Stick composition, developed over a couple years, and I finally captured a reasonable performance of it. The tune is inspired in part by my various progressive rock influences, with some early 20th century symphonic flavors thrown in (Vaughan Williams, Holst). Much of the piece revolves around harmonic ideas based on the interesting polychords that are possible with the Stick, juxtaposing different chords between hands.

Re: The Third Enigma live
Nice work Rob! Nothing lacking in the video to my eyes, in fact the atmosphere with the books, the contrast or reds, browns and your silhouette would have been hard to create if your were trying. The sound quality was great too. As for the song What can i say except I am going to go practice now . Inspiring... Of all the influences you mentioned other than it was all "Rob" I thought that the Gentle Giant part stood out as the the clearest thematic idea. I have a feeling that "The Third Enigma" will continue to evolve. Best to you. jRj

Re: The Third Enigma live
Thanks for the comments! Unfortunately I discovered a weird problem with the mix, I didn't realize for that one song my effects were summing the tracks to mono (but I was mixing in Logic as if bass and melody were on separate tracks, therefore processing the whole instrument twice- duh) so strange phasing problems were going on, blurring out the transients. Ugh.
I've uploaded a new one (and now everyone can tell me the first one sounded better!)
[EDIT: video fixed in original post]

Hey Rob - this sounds really awesome. I just upgraded to the HD-500, and so far, I'm not finding good sounds. How are you processing the base tone, i.e., before the effects? Are you running through an amp model, or bypassing them?

Re: The Third Enigma live
Hi Jim,
I generally don't use the amp models except when I want to use some distortion on the melody side (which is not often). So I'm mostly just using the delay/chorus/auto volume and sometimes rotary speaker effects (in this particular tune it's mostly just some delay). For "synth swell" type stuff I'll add some filtering/wah and multiple delays to thicken up the sound.
I still use the Fishman for EQ and reverb.
Rob
