I've gotten out of the habit of it lately, but I used to keep strips of electrical tape stuck to my rack, I could pull them off quickly while playing, press them down at the bridge for a quick mute and take them off quickly when I didn't want the effect any more. See Chapter 9 of The Stick Book, for more about this. Larry Tuttle, Bob and several other players I've seen have developed the practice of muting the strings by tapping directly on the frets. It takes a little getting used to, and you have to be pretty precise, but it's a great sound as well. Al of these muted sounds are amazing with the PASV-4's bridge pickup and out-of-phase position, especially incombination with vibrato (for a nice koto sound) Happy preparing.....

I just got a great "muted bells percussion" sound from the PASV4 dual in-phase position by applying Emmet's advice regarding rubber bands between neck and pickups.

Re: Prepared Stick for new exciting sounds Tapping directly on the fret wire gives you a decent muted tone, but I don't think it chokes the strings nearly as much as bridge muting. It's much more staccato and punchy at the bridge, imho.
