Post My First Stick Piece
Greetings!

I have now played the 10-String Grand for little less than 4 months, constantly recording interesting bits and pieces (have over 4 hours of stuff now).

About a month and a half ago as the summer ended I made a choice that I have to start making a full composition.
As interesting all the small ideas that I recorded were, nobody else even knew what I was doing.

As this is my first piece with the Chapman Stick, I wanted to be with just the one instrument to explore and familiarize myself with its possibilities - thus a solo piece.

Now, here it is 1,5 months of practicing and recording later, hope you like it:

The hardest part for me as a guitar player is two hand independence.
So, most of the piece is relying on interdependence instead.

Hi Kevin!

I'm glad you liked.

Hoping/working on that "great player" part :)

I'm glad no one recorded what I did after my first 5 months!

Sounds great.

Carbon. What was your background before the stick.

That was just great playing and great music I don't care if you've been playing 6 months or 6 years. You my friend are a wonderful musician.

Well done
Brett

I agree with Randy, we early stuff was on an ancient Stick with rusty strings. Although I do like having a sort of diary of progress, so keep recording, it's working.

I really like this format for you and envy that you are able to compose your own pieces and get them recorded. Don't make us wait another 5 months for the next one.

Thanks a lot Randy, Brett and Gene!

My background is in playing guitar for twenty years, almost 15 years of it in a band.
Also composing for the same amount of time.

You can check out my band stuff on Bandcamp:
http://kantorvoy.bandcamp.com/

And my ego trip :) on my webpage:
http://www.kaspartorn.eu/

The recording actually doesn't give a completely accurate image of my live stick playing skills.
I can play the piece through, but there will always be some mistakes, dead notes, rhythmic wavering etc here and there.
The recording is made in sections.

I'm usually a slow composer, but I'm working on it.
I promise, no five month delivery time for the next one :)

Performing and recording are two different art forms. It is as hard to master both as it is
to master either :? A very wonderful presentation on both fronts for sure 8-)

I am curious how you got that arpeggio synth sound in the beginning? It sounds Stick generated
and if it is, it would be a very fun effect to play with :). Tell us your secret...

I like the musical vision coming through in this piece.

EDIT: Forgot... there is also some slight chorusing and rotary speaker emulation.

:) The secret is that there is no secret ;)

There are no special effects other than reverb and a slight delay through the entire song with the same settings.

The intro part is played uncrossed, all the rest is crossed.
No synths. The specific character of that part is due to the fact that both hands occasionally play the same notes, I guess.

I might notate the piece if I have time.
