Re: Stickrad Trio - Live at MONA Void
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude. This is really good. I am digging this right now. I am huge fan of the Bill Frisell Band circa 1983 - 1992 and this is just making my day. Great tones from the whole trio. Expressive, ambient and exploratory and it's a great groove. I feel like there's going to be this break and you guys are going to go all free jazz and freak out, but there is this delicious restraint that permeates and draws me in at every turn. Put out an album me ol', this is just getting better and better (6:48 - killer!). Great job Rad, you have got a fantastic sound and trio here. Looking forward to more.

Re: Stickrad Trio - Live at MONA Void
Thanks 88.!
Weird and wonderful music, that's Tassie for you.! Thanks for your positive comments.
GP.! I'm so happy to be sharing this and thanks for your enthusiastic and articulate comments.! You're so right, it's time for a cd. I'm going to start it within 12 months, no more delays. I definitely feel that I need to gig this more before I press record. The gigs are building and I'm just getting more real about the whole thing.
Stick really represents my highest creative mind and I've been able to compose on this instrument in ways that perfectly reflect that sound I hear.
Good times.

Re: Stickrad Trio - Live at MONA Void
Yeah, man guys like you and Ric Byer are in a class all your own. I never quite know how people will take me comparing their music to someone else but this style is something that I was listening to a lot when I first started playing the Stick - Bill Frisell, Marc Johnson, John Scofield coupled with Cocteau Twins and Lush.
The trio works really well together. Everyone compliments the vision of the music and it really feels like you are all enjoying it. Looking forward to more video when you get it!

Re: Stickrad Trio - Live at MONA Void
Oh shit.! Well very generous of you to mention my name in the same sentence as Ric.
Having said that, making comparisons as you say, is folly if not just plain lame and not very insightful. Who was it recently you quoted as saying "we don't judge here". By this I mean to say Stick is place for me where I celebrate no parallels that would lead to me judging, comparing ... just the pure enjoyment of writing and playing music.
It's curious how you picked out the creative side of 80s influence mixed with modern jazz. We do actually have a cover of Samurai Hee Haw (MJ) and Blues for Tony- (AH). I'm a child of the 80s ....
Still I'm really happy to distill what I feel is a 00's conception of music, that will become clearer as we release more stuff.
Thanks for your bruv luv and enthusiasm Gene. It's real as steel and gives me that good feeling in my gut.

Re: Stickrad Trio - Live at MONA Void
Stickrad - I love this, man. Great-sounding, interesting, atmospheric stuff. I like how you and the keyboard player switched the spotlight so easily, not to mention how restrained the players were, which simply added suspense. Great job! Weird, wonderful music, indeed! I have a similar bent with my playing, at the moment, basically going where I could never go with a six string electric. earthgene wrote: Bill Frisell, Marc Johnson, John Scofield coupled with Cocteau Twins and Lush. Gene, I thought I was the only Stickist who listened to Lush and the Twins! I really need to create something with the shoegaze preset I ran across on my Boss box......and I would probably mix that with some Alan Holdsworth sounding lines, as my dexterity improves!

Re: Stickrad Trio - Live at MONA Void
Samurai Hee-Haw? Are you kidding me? That tune was a game changer for me. I caught Mark Johnson back in the day in Santa Monica at "My Place". The nicest guy. You guys are on that path to radness Rad!
I am listening back to this again and digging any bit as much as I heard it the first time. Great Wednesday morning work music.
And yeah VT1997 - all the way with the Cocteau Twins, pretty safe to say they are my favorite band. 3 seconds into any song and you know - it's the twins. They were so close to getting back together for a Lollapalooza show but Liz backed out. What Rad is doing here with his trio is right in line with that kind of mystery, control and sense of space - it's magic. I want more.
This one give me chills every time.
