David Adrian's Soundtrack Without Film
David Adrian is a talented Mexican drummer/string player/composer now based in Los Angeles. His project "Soundtrack Without Film" has recently released the concept album "Wrath's Fury".
David decided to use a number of musicians from various parts of the globe to round out his production and add variety to the tracks. As a result, the album feautures several very talented female vocalists (the highlight for me), about 9 different lead guitarists (including Michael Bianco on 14-string!), cellos, violins, er-hu, didgeridoo, 2 theremin players and a short appearance by yours truly on 10-string Stick on track 8 ("Nights of Wrath"). My piece was recorded to a scratch track along with David's drums, but I had no idea of the context of the piece outside of the 45 seconds or so I played on. As an experiment of this type of collaboration I think the album stands up pretty well. I haven't listened to it enough to conclude how it will hold up over time. So far I've also avoided listening to the lyrics, so no comment there.
The overall vibe is most definitely "progressive rock", but branches out to operatic, ethnic and acoustic styles. The vocal performances are strong but always melodic, keeping it on the "accessible" side of heavy rock. For anyone who's interested, you can find songs and info on the SWoF myspace page
http://www.myspace.com/soundtrackwithoutfilm. David will be posting his "making of the album" notes shortly.
Cheers,
Andy
