My first in-person jazz experience was in 1971, seeing Buddy Rich's orchestra (Buddy himself wasn't at the gig, and Louie Bellson filled in). Researching that night decades later, I learned that, while he hadn't toured with Buddy Rich, Tony had recorded with him and his band in 1974.
