Re: Other innovative "interesting" instruments...
JRJ:
Thanks so much! I will check into the CDBaby page - I thought they had clips. I have released one "official" solo album. All of my recent solo music is on Soundcloud or Bandcamp. I am in a jazz fusion band (Apothecary) and a progressive rock band (Formativ). Albums for each are on CDBaby and full songs on Souncloud.
Steve Martin is an awesome banjo player but Bela Fleck is my favorite. I saw him many times with the Flecktones and recently with Abigail Washburn (along with the Punch Brothers). I have a modeled banjo on the Line 6 Variax but I don't even bother trying to emulate playing one. At least 75% of the sound is the picking method.
The Zendrum was inspired by Flecktones drummer Roy "Futureman" Wooten. As high tech as Roy gets with his Drumitar (based on a SynthAxe) and the Zendrum, he does a kick ass solo on cardboard boxes too! It just goes to show that it is always the musician rather than the gear.
Thanks.
Jeremy

Re: Other innovative "interesting" instruments...
As a follow-up to this thread, I finished a new piece tonight using the Zendrum to play virtual Hand Pans and Roli Seaboard Rise to play Acoustic Guitar and Sax sounds. I may add a Stick track but it might make things too busy.

Re: Other innovative "interesting" instruments...
Interesting thread, but I can't seem to find the time to try and explore playing all the different choices! Jeremy, we have touched base before about the Zendrum. I remembered you from the old zendrum forum. I still play my zendrum having owned it for 12 years. I Have been a drummer for too many years to count! I played the zendrum exclusively in a classic rock acoustic lineup for 4 years. I've dabbled with electronic drums in many forms. The past 15 months have been given over to learning the Stick and music theory ( Thank you SA!). Love Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.... All are virtuosos on their instruments.... I've seen them live twice and would do it again anytime for inspiration. Very cool to see Futureman with his drumkit and acoustic drums, playing a solo using ALL of them at once! I wish I had more time, more experience and more motivation to learn more instruments, but I would like to become much more proficient on the Stick. My time will better spent (IMHO) staying with the Stick, and still playing my drums and zendrum... for now, hehehe.....

Just curious--always trying to get more awesome performance videos of you awesome players, and I've not seen a lot of Zendrumming. I have a NI Maschine, which is only 16-pads, but I like it a lot for making bash! crash! noises. I'd love to see you rocking the Zendrums. [Folds a virtual twenty and slides it into Rand's electronic bread jar for a request...That should buy a virtual sandwich or two... ]

Ok, so now I have GAS for the linnstrument too I have made several attempts approaching traditional keyboard layout (piano/synths), but still come back to the guitar/stick neck. The linnstrument seems to be the way for me to drive synths with a familiar neck-like layout.

I'll post a couple of old videos from that band. I'm pretty sure I can find them. This week I'm on vaca with the fam in sunny FL ( Marco Island). I'll check later tonight but right now I am on a "tight" sched...... I gotta get to the beach!

Family time is precious time and Florida ain't cheap (as the wife reminds me while plotting our summer Disney world trip). Get to the beach! But when y'all get back, dig us up some of them videos, Rand, and we'll rock it out!

I'm planning to get one this fall--after the aforementioned expensive trip to DisneyWorld.

I went to one of his concerts in A2 a few years ago. He also uses a MIDIfied drum kit with no bass drum, but rather a kick-pedal on a Djembe mounted sideways with a trigger on it.
