The Baryton
I found a tape of a live Dutch TV show I did back in 1999 the other day. It was kind of an "unusual instrument" show, and the other featured guest was playing one of these, which is basically a viol with a course of strings on the back that vibrated sympathetically, but that you could also play with your thumb, while bowing on the font. The guy who played it was named Jeremy Brooker. http://www.barytonsociety.com/hauschkaensemble.htmlIt was nice not playing the rarest instrument in the room for a change...

Re: The Baryton
Glad to hear about The Baryton for the first time. By a funny coincidence I was just enjoying my morning cafe latte watching a Hurdy Gurdy video. Not that the HG is so rare, but this video is a good document for how cool this instrument can sound. In Mattias Loibner's hands it sort of becomes "an acoustic Eigenharp"

Re: The Baryton
Cool. I thought the Baryton was going to be a bass Hurdy Gurdy based on the illustration. These instruments have an mysterious old world quality to them. Speaking of which, I showed the Stick to my grandmother this weekend who asked if the Stick was an antique (prior to realizing I had to plug it in). I thought it was really cool that it was truly a timeless design as she couldn't place it's age. That really made me want an AcouStick.
Diverging a little here (sorry Greg): My fav Hurdy Gurdy video proving you can rock with anything... I would love to see what happens if Trey Gunn + Nigel Eaton got together (and perhaps a sploosh of Ed Wynne for spacey weirdness).

While we're at it : Here's a video that shows both stick and egenharp (drehleier in Germanif i'm correct). Those instruments fit perfectly in a medevil setting Cheers, Bas

I meant to joke about Loibner's alien playing technique on the Hurdy Gurdy and I did not mean the Egenharp but the Eigenharp! Like this one:

Thanks for that video. I really like how the different textures of each string set blend.
