Hey, anyone who cares. I got my Oud yesterday!!! Now I've got another possible distraction from being the best Stick player that I can be. Some day I want to take a photo, sort of a "family portrait" of all my instruments. Not to brag about(like kids or grandkids), just to cherish. (And maybe for insurance purposes) As it turns out, I already have a pretty good grasp on playing the Oud. Likely from playing fretless instruments and instruments with different tunings. It is a Turkish oud, but my Mel Bay instruction book uses the Arabic way of tuning and recomends tuning my oud to that way while going through the book. Happy new year, Mike |

Congratulations on your new Oud. There's some great videos on Youtube of fantastic players. I'm sure you'll be up to speed in no time. |

When I bought a new Martin acoustic last year, the store I bought it from had the new Godin electric Oud with the 13 pin hex output. I tried playing it, nice instrument, but didn't get to see what it could do with a guitar synth. |

Check out Dhafer Youssef... an amazing talent on the Oud... fusing traditional with the modern... he is all over youtube. Best of luck, that instrument has a deep soul... |

Happy new year, Mike Congratulations...I tried the Godin Oud and it sounds great. On my side I have a Godin fretless (nylon strings) and the feeling is really close to the Oud. I love to play 2 instruments without frets...this Godin and the cello...and with the cello I have a lot of sustain with the bow...fantastic... @rclere and Kataway, Thanks. Indeed shortly after I ordered my Oud(about 10 wks ago) a friend sent me a video of Dhafer Youssef which I posted under "inspirations", along with a few others. After hearing how he composes and plays on the instrument, my impatience to receive one increased. In te mean time I have subsiquently bought 2 of his CDs; Digital Prophesy and Divine Shadows, the latter containing a version of Odd Poetry.(the first of my posted videos.) I have been able to establish and play the opening and second "riff" of that song and enjoy improvising along with the song. I have played the cello and upright bass and fretless electric bass before. That experience helps alot. Because of the precision involved playing the "european" or western scales on those instruments, I am having difficulty forcing myself to play the quarter(give or take) tones of the Arabic scales. They sound great when I hear others play them, but sound out of tune when the same notes are done by my hands.(and perhaps they are) On a side, but fun, note I have been playing "Black Dog" and "In my time of dying" by Zeppelin on the oud(inspired by John Paul Jones solo act on laptop steel guitar). These songs sound incredible on the oud. But that is not surprosing considering how middle eastern and egyption music seem to have had an effect on them. I am sure my oud is not as fancy as a Godin. Probably the equivelent of a decent Fender electric guitar copy(not counting '80's Japanese models). But it sound wonderful tomy ears, and has a built in pick up so I can have fun with my pedals too.(in the future, I am having too much fun playing it clean for now) Mike |

Also, I just played something that reminded me of Mark Sandman's work in Morphine. I know i am getting a bad start on this now. I think I should get back to traditional oud players. Mike |
