Post Musical attributes
What would y'all say is your main attribute when it comes to music? You know... Your greatest strength? Your "knack"...

Some folks have a crazy good ear, some have an inclination towards the written note, and others seem to be able to 'put it together'. Some folks can write a song, whereas others can revisit existing material... And there are other more subtle things...

What do you bring to the table?

Post Re: Musical attributes
Melodies and riffs. Got a million of them. And more importantly, the ability to sort through the mostly crap and pick out a few good nuggets. Still working on the putting them together into cool songs--as are most of us, I guess.

On the crap analogy:
In Kansas (where I'm from) they say "You can't polish a turd." I used that clever bit of down-homeism in a business meeting once and a wonderful contractor from Manchester, UK, had not only heard it but was vastly more clever:

"But you CAN roll it in glitter!"

Food to think about (but not to eat). Cheers!

Post Re: Musical attributes
Jayesskerr - what a great question, that for me really provoked some thought.... I would have to say that my "ear" is my greatest strength.... As I continue to practice, study and take lessons, I have found that the Stick has given me a great facility to understand harmony and melody ( I have been a bass player most of my life). And my ears really lead me in a beautiful direction. I would also say that I "listen" , and play just what is needed. I took to heart what Joe Zawinul said, "Solo without soloing". I like to make what I play underneath interesting, with tonal color, groove, space and time. I am not a great soloist, so I seek to support those who really shine on their instrument. I seek to make them sound even better.... The other thing i bring to the table, that I guess I get most comments about is my tone and voice on the instrument. This is something I have crafted over years and years... having many influences on the bass, I finally arrived at my own voice..... Stick, the same thing.... A question I find worthy of asking is "How do we move forward in our endeavor of mastery of the Stick, while suspending unnecessary criticism and judgement... these are hindrances on the path to Mastery. Blessings All!

Harmonic sensibility. I appear to have a knack for finding the right chord, and being able to make it interesting.
