c+9
Please can someone help me on the c+9 chord in the free hands book The chord in the book page 12 shows c+9 and the position you play it in, The bass side you play c. Medley side e , Bb , Eb or D# ? I thought C IS 1, Bb IS b3, D would be the 9th Is this a miss print or am I wrong as I'm just learning I am probably wrong. + to me is Augmented and that would be G# If someone could set me straight it would be great Paul.

Re: c+9
I don't have the book in front of me but it probably means C7 with an "augmented 9th"
So any tone can be augmented usually the 5th but in this case the 9th. So D augmented to D#

Re: c+9
Hmmn, as it's written I might also interpret that as a Caug triad with an added 9th; lol I am accustomed to chord symbols being written a certain way, I don't like triangles and things like that haha Context is everything, though and a quick play through of the chord in the lesson makes a lot of sense..
In the context of the lesson, it's actually C7#9, like the "Jimi Hendrix" chord. What Emmett is really showing here is the relationship between the chord, and the blues scale;
CEGBb with D# as the b9. The D# could be thought of as an enharmonic equivalent to Eb, which is also a min3. Which is in the blues scale C Eb F Gb G Bb (1 b3 4 b5 5 and b7)
Really, it boils down to this; A dominant 7th chord can take any tension over it. Dom7's are about transitioning... V to I, and the secondary dominant/ tritone substitution route also... All about resolving.
Just my thoughts, I'm just a guitar player so take it with a grain of salt! Good luck, friend!

Re: c+9
E is the 3rd and Bb is the b7. That makes it a dominant chord . The alteration D# is the #9 (+9) It's also known as The Jimi chord..... see Purple Haze

Re: c+9
Oh, and the first few chords of that lesson are spelled that way, I think for a couple of reasons...
1) It shows you how to play both melody and bass side simultaneously with one hand via triad over root note Eb/C gives you C Eb G Bb. No maj3 here, but it's "implied"
2) It shows you how complex stuff comes from simple things. Simple fingerings become complex chords.
3) He goes on to substitute C7#9 for just good old C7, which gives you some options and shows the relationships of the triads with each other. Cool lesson.
4) Steve A does this shit in his sleep. Extended triads are like breathing to him... Send him an email, he can talk about that sort of thing on an entirely different level...
Good luck!
