Ulnar Nerver Entrapment
Just wondering if anyone has dealt with ulnar nerve entrapment. I've had an ongoing battle with a lot of pain in the elbow and forearm for several months. Generally anything that requires pinching a fretboard has aggravated it. I was dabbling more on keys for a while but have generally not played much since July of last summer. These days I'm pretty much off playing music entirely which is very much a drag. Work dictates I can't give up typing so for all I know that'll be the death of me.
I've seen a doctor twice. We've tried some anti-inflammatory and a makeshift arm brace that I haven't had much luck with. Recently added some stretches to my daily activities so we'll see how that goes.
I've pretty much been quiet about this but I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with this and how long it may have taken to get over it.

Re: Ulnar Nerver Entrapment
I am sorry that you are going through this painful ordeal.... I am an acupuncturist and shiatsu practitioner. I have dealt with this w/patients on more than one occasion.. what I would suggest is do your current anti inflammatory regime.... seek out either/or and acupuncturist, physical therapist and an Osteopath. What is going to really help this is good hands on approach addressing the soft tissue as well. Generally, when there is an issue of the upper extremity, one also has to rule out the root cause as their being a lesion such as a subluxation of the cervical spine, or restriction of the Thoracic outlet and brachial plexus. If you can find an Osteopath that deals in soft tissue and bone related issues would be best. Massage may give temporary palliative relief but generally will not take care of the issue. Also, You can roll the fascia out with foam rollers. you might find laying on two tennis balls between you shoulder blades as helpful, as well as rolling out the forearms. Here is a link for some great facial rollers that I use and like https://www.tptherapy.com/?gclid=CjwKEA ... oCzlzw_wcBNutrition: bench chain amino acids, creatine, CoQ10 and Vits. C&E. Magnesium is also good to look at. How is your hydration? Hope this was helpful. r

Glenn, sorry to hear this. I went through similar pain before I switched from guitar to Stick. Yoga helped a ton -- corrective posture, etc. So did a split and pitched keyboard at work. Comfort Keyboard System

Sorry to hear that, Glenn! A lot of us have to type for our jobs, and the split keyboard does work for some people. I don't have any other advice for you, other than well wishes for the best!

Re: Ulnar Nerver Entrapment
Hi, Glenn.
I'm sorry to hear about this. I have been dealing with the same thing for a very long time. At one point in my career it was a very real threat to my ability to work as a programmer. Through a combination of knowledge, the right exercises, the right stretches, and many visits to PTs and OTs I was able to save my career and even start playing music again. I had to retrain my body to do many basic things. It took me over two years but I relearned how to type. I had to train myself to hold my arms and hands differently when I slept so I wouldn't wake up with hands that were completely numb.
I tried many different gadgets but most of them are gimmicks that can't replace making the fundamental changes needed by your body. I'm glad you are seeking help from doctors and therapists. They know a lot, especially the PTs and OTs. The main advice I would give is to do what they tell you. It can take a long time to see progress and it's easy to become discouraged. Please know that many have dealt with this and are back to functioning. I know how hard it is and how uncertain things are. It does get better.
I'd be happy to talk about this in more detail if you'd like. Let me know.
-Eric

Re: Ulnar Nerver Entrapment
Just an update here so I can listen to myself talk I've learned not to get too optimistic after many setbacks but over the last week I've managed to string together more comfortable days in a row than I have in almost a year. I started to play piano again about a week ago and have put in a couple of short sessions everyday without paying for it. The big test will be fretboard instruments. Maybe this week. I was actually starting to get used to the idea of watching this summer's Interlochen workshop as a spectator but am now feeling like daylight is creeping back in.

Patience and time does seem to be the only way for this type of RSI. I hope to hear you play in July. I also hope to be able to play myself, however that's not guaranteed at this point. -Eric
