It IS rewarding, isn't it? Here's the thing - although there are undoubtedly ways to streamline the learning process, it's still going to take a bit of time I think... I am well into the second invention now, but the first one is still a very major part of my practice routine. I am learning from it every time I play it, it gets me thinking about something different I could try in my own music.
A few things I have been doing this time around as I work out the second Invention are as follows... I don't know if it helps really, but I like to think it does. 1) Listening to the piece both as a midi, and also the Glen Gould version at least 4-5 times a day (more if possible) 2) For Invention 1, I dove in with a "hands together" approach right off the bat. This time, I am going to memorize both parts as a "hands separate" étude, then once each side is memorized, I will dive in and memorize both hands. I can already hack my way through it by slowly sightreading it. 3) Pressure testing via metronome, audio recording, video recording, and live performance.
I'm keeping close track of my practice timeframes (as always) I am hoping it takes a lot less time for this one.
My goal, is to eventually learn and play them all, crazy I know! They sound so good though...
