Post Re: How much?, and What Are you practicing?
For some reason, i now manage to spend a few hours per week on the Stick (well tonight, i spent 7 hours playing and searching after my work day...).

After nearly 20 years with the stick, i have no real « routine », i focus on writing some new material to play. When i decide to adapt or play a new piece, i now try to get out from my comfort zone as well.
But playing with a new percussion player recently, i had to work on covers i really don’t manage yet to play correcty, including the classic Superstition from Stevie Wonder.
I came across this tutorial video which helped me a lot to understand the mechanics of this funk masterpiece

On other words, i tend to try to find some inspiration from other instruments players. Thus i try to avoid sounding as another stick player. It may include scoring some solos from great musicians i like.

Another great document i read recently (in french, sorry) from the maestro François Jeanneau : slow is the key!

I agree with this idea. I always slow things down and break a tune into smaller parts. I practice each part until I can play it in my sleep.

This is the same method that is taught in Tai Chi. Slow movements are practiced until they become habitual. When called to action, these movements are lightning fast.

WOW Bruno, what an eye-opener! Even if my french is very poor ...

Anyway, François Jeanneau has also an english version, which you can find here:
