Post Take 5 StaffTab (Classic, MR, and Baritone Melody tunings)
Hi Everyone,

Marty's recent posting of "Take 5" reminded me that I had started a chart on this a while back when I had a student who wanted to learn the tune. He ended up not needing it, so I never finished it, but here it is.

Because of the range of the tune, it's written for Classic tuning, at the correct octave (not written an octave higher than pitch as is customary with StaffTab.

As always, if you spot any errors, I'm always grateful for a correction, and if you have any questions about the notation or the fingering choices, please let me know.

Have fun:

Thanks, Boaz,

I'll try to get a Baritone Melody and MR version posted soon for the rest of you. Helping people arrange tunes is one of the main things people ask me to do in skype lessons, so I fell like it's a good thing to share with the community.

Awesomely terrific Greg! I went on guitar tabs and downloaded it but it was so sketchy I couldn't do anything much with it. This is rock solid and perfect! Thank you, not just for this song but for all of your generous community efforts!

Post Re: Take 5 StaffTab (Classic tuning)
Greg,
Thanks for sharing this StaffTab(tm) file.

IN SUMMARY.... stop those cold sweats, you are not in class before a final! :D
StaffTab (tm) is the perfect way to showcase this piece because StaffTab (tm) and Greg actually did the work for you to show you the best way to finger the notes and what position or positions to play them in.

Yes, it does all that. and tells you which finger to use (the circle (1st) , baseball diamond (2nd base), triangle (3rd - 3 sides) and square ( hip to be- 4th, four sides). Each line is a string just like in bass or guitar tab, the "tylenol" show which string the note is on, and the numbers tell you what frets.

DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE KEY!
The Stick of all instruments is key neutral- meaning because of the consistency, you can just move all over the place without changing fingering or scales or anything. So, if you can play in C ( no sharps or flats all natural notes) you can play in Gb in 6 flats no problemo-no kidding.

Here's how- pick your favorite major scale for C then
1) move it across to the next set of higher strings -now you are in F
2) move it up one fret Gb- Six flats.... now that didn't hurt! in fact it should bring a warm fuzzy feeling of accomplishment. any other warm fuzzy feelings you might need to see bathroom attention especially if felt for longer than 4 hours.

DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE BRIDGE
Everyone I know, and i know myself pretty darn good ( meaning I do this) chugs along with that cool vamp over the Ebm to Bbm7, then gets to the bridge and "mumbles" for 5 measures praying to get back to the cool vamp.
Well, here's a couple of tips to get you through it
Aside from the Cbma7th (ugh- I hate enharmonic equivalents- it's a friggin Bmaj7th but nooooo they have to stay in the flat scheme of things- your pick which ever one psychologically doesn't give you cognative dissonance, pick the one you like! )then to Abm6 (just an Abm and you add the f from the scale) the rest can be viewed as a bunch of ii-V7 with tonal center key shifts or jumping between major scales for a measure or two.

in C - the harmonized scale is C-Dm-Em-F-G7-Am-B half dim and then back to C, so the ii (or chord formed from the second note using EVERY OTHER NOTE IN THE MAJOR SCALE is Dm7 (d-f-a-c) and the chord formed form the fifth note same way is G7 (g-b--d-f) which can resolve to a major chord the C .

so Bbm7 to Ebm7 is an Ab major scale ii-V7 (key center Ab)
next it goes to Abm7-Dbm7 is a Gb major scale ii-V7 (key center Gb)
Gbmaj7 - boom right to Gb of which Gbmaj7 is right from the scale (key center Gb- signature key of the piece)
[same chord repeat- ending to get you back to an Eb]
Fm7 to Bb7 is an Eb major scale ii-V7 (key center Eb)
trickily it gets you back to an Eb, which they they conveniently make an Ebm and back into the cool vamp.

MR. MOTIF
another help is that on the Stick you can just keep moving down the touchboard as long as your hands don't get "locked". A motif is a grouping of notes using the same rhythmic notation ( both eighth notes with a flag) or similar parallel of how the notes are interval apart from each other.
The first measure of the Bridge uses a "downward minor arpeggio with the root on the bottom shape" and then a chromatic, or every note up to that note. The next two measures use a "downward major arpeggio with the root on the bottom shape" and a chromatic up to that note. A little window dressing and another chromatic riff gets you back to the same 4 measures ending in a single note and the opening riff to the tune.

Hope this helps- this is a great song worth woodshedding, no mumbling in that bridge just take your time to learn it using the "motif" method even if you don't just yet get the tonal center stuff [you can drive your car without knowing all the computer controlled components right? right!] and this is a tune that if you play it, the unhip will say "oh, you play Jazz.,.." :D
and the hip will say "Nice"!

I've atch the Real Book version- sorry if it scanned sideways!
take care,
Dave B "DBro"

Thanks, guys, for all the kind comments. I'll try to get the Bari Melody and MR versions online soon.

D'Bro, excellent commentary and analysis. Ebmin is not a favorite key of guitarists, but pianists love it.

It's like what Paul Simon said... "I'm a great piano player, I only play the black keys..."
