Post FLatwound Strings
In the first years of production, the Stick came with all flatwound strings, as far as I konw. I don't know when SE switched to roundwounds, but my first Stick (1989) had roundwounds, and I believe they had used those since the mid 80's.

Flatwounds are having a great revival on electric bass ( I love Thomastick Infeld flatwounds on my Stingray clone!!!), and I wonder: wouldn't it be cool to have that option for Stick as well? I'd love to try some flatwounds on!

I think I'd really miss the "sploink" of the roundwounds, but I do agree; for some folks flats might be pretty neat. Maybe a more muted tone, ala standup bass style.
Good post!

cheers,
kev

The biggest worry would be the sonic imbalance between the would strings and the plain ones. Could work well for 4ths tuning on a 10-string. On your 1/4 fretless this would be very interesting...

Try some and let us know Francesco!

Made in the UK! Much cheaper for us UK Stick players. Are these flats?

Hi Francesco, here's a demo I recorded in 1982 with my old #466 ironwod stick (before tracking the vocals). At that time, I would record on a TEAC 8 track machine. There were flatwound strings on the Stick and the bass side sounds quite badass. I remember using a two hand bass part mixed technique of tapping and slapping the notes to produce harmonics.Check it out.

Thank you Olivier! That does sound badass
I would imagine also most, if not all, the 80's Stick recordings of TL with King Crimson would have been made with flatwounds... or not? According to the timeline on stick.com, roundwounds were introduced in January 1982, so that should be the case

I always thought that Flint Blade's bass side sounded like flatwounds, but I am pretty sure it is just the way he plays. I still don't know how he gets that sound.
