Post A Periodic Reminder About Spam
Hi, everyone.

We seem to have a lot of new members so I thought it would be a good moment to refresh our collective memory about spam on the forum.

Why do we get spam here?

Spammers have figured out an ingenious way to bypass Captcha software that attempts to filter out bots. They use people. It is pretty much impossible to stop someone from registering for the forum and then posting spam. There are groups around the world who hire people to sit all day and post spam on forums like this one.

What should we do when we see a spam post?

The first thing is don't reply to it. When the spam is cleared out by Manny, your reply will still be there and if you quote it the spam will still be there, too.

The best thing to do is report it to Manny, our esteemed host. You do that by clicking on the little exclamation point icon at the bottom of the post. Like this:

If someone has already reported it then you're done. If you see a popup menu you should select the Spam option and then click Submit. That's it.

What happens after we report spam?

As soon as Manny can get to it he will delete the spammer's account and all the posted spam. This can take a few days as Manny actually has those things called a job and a life.

Is there anything we can do to help?

Yes, you can donate to support stickist.com. This is a private forum run and financed by Manny. If you get some value from it, I hope you'll consider making a small donation from time to time to help keep it going.

Thanks,

-Eric

It probably means that Manny is unusually busy or unavailable to fix this quickly. This is a particularly bad spammer and they don't realize most of us use the active topics link and see them all. You could block this one user and you won't see their posts.

Great post OP, makes my job easier/centralized with the admin panel and reported posts. I just nuked about 30 accounts created in the last 24 hours; spammers at work. I just changed the new user register from the usual email reply activation to admin approval. I do this from time to time to thwart the spambots and cheap labor spammers.

BTW, I check at least once a day, part of my money coffee routine. Spammers typically won't last more than 24 hours here.

My pleasure. Siege is right. Been getting lots of activation notices with Russian and other suspicious email addresses/IP's; around 50 or so in the last 48 hours.

So for now, I've temporarily shut down Registration for new users.

If a person would like to register as a new user, email me directly and I'll take care of it for you. You'll figure out how to email me. ;)

SIncere thanks a whole lot Manny.

A few jerks have to make it more difficult for those new who want to sign up. :( And we may have more from Europe after Stick Camp.
