So my son is taking to the Stick slowly, but surely. One thing he would like to do is recreate the sound of that bass on Yes' "Roundabout". I honestly have no clue how to do that! Any suggestions? |

On the stick????? Chris squire double tracked most of that tune with a rickenbacker bass using a pick and a telecaster guitar using a pick. He couldn't even reproduce the tone live. My advice is keep the treble up as high as you can and play percussively. Brett |

A tall order. I think it is one of those things that you can only get close to especially since CS played with a pick. Outside of getting a Rickenbacker or trying the above possibilities there is an old processor called a 'Roland V-G8' that in their day were about the best thing you could get but now seem to be very reasonable in price . The origional V-G8 has a patch that is intended to mimic Squire  ...(You need a Midi adaptor for your Stick)Check out reverb.com jRj |

I can get a close Squire sound on my 12-string DBR on the melody strings all the way at nut positions w/ left and right hand going at it. PASV p.u. both p.u.'s in phase. Sometimes using a capo ringing/jangling sound. I just installed a ACTV p.u. and changed tunings to Deep Matched Reciprocal so not any more... |

It aint gonna happen on the Stick Michael.......although the Stick has a gnarly quick attack, the only way to get Squires sound is a Ric bass and outboard gear, as Brett said, there are a few tracks going on during that tune, Chris plays a cool guitar riff after the lyric "the words will make you out and out".....everyone thinks its a bass riff but it ain't. At the end of the tune, there's actually 3 or 4 bass tracks happening. Pretty cool. There's a guy on youtube that does a smash job of covering this tune.......search Miguelbass and check his version out. There's also an isolated bass track of Squire laying down the track on YouTube as well,.......sounds frickin great, lots of distortion. cheers, kev |

I'm also a huge fan of that Rickenbacker "growl" sound from Geddy to Squire and many others. I've been able to come up with something that I really like with the passive pickups from the Railboard and then two Waves plugins to alter the attack EQs. These Waves plugins have added a wonderful growl to my stick sound (wonderful to me, anyway). Here is me describing my attempt to get that Rickenbacker "growl" sound: Quote: Just for the bass sound, I'm using two Waves plugins that I really like: Chris Lord-Alge--in fact, the entire series is awesome and I use it now on almost everything. http://www.waves.com/bundles/chris-lord ... ure-series The bass plugin is on sale for $49.  And using "Waves Bass Rider" to get a consistent level (that's probably a newbie cheater there.) And then Waves SSLG Channel, with a setting from Joe West called "Joe West Bass Growler Aggro [Aggressive]" and I tweak the frequencies that are giving me the growl I want. That last plugin is doing most of the work, but I like the CLA Bass plugins because it offers frequencies (bass and treble) to tweak, and compression, and chorusing, but with very simple controls and intuitive settings. I use none of the presets as is, but they are good starts to dig in. They really change a bassline into entirely different timbres and sound like different instruments and players and styles. Lots to learn still with the CLA plugins but I've been using them for 3-4 years (!) on piano and guitar and keyboards and vocals as a starting point and then add a bit here and there. My last recorded attempt on the sound in a performance video playing live is here: [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1H6UqOUoEE[/youtube] I've been working on it, and also mixing in a MIDI sound, and sample banks, will get you there, but I can use my plugins and play live on the Railboard and get some nice growl. I don't know that I'd give up on it. If your son is reading StaffTab, have him take a look at this. Maybe it's doable given enough practice; I seem to have made my way through it a bit ... clumsily, but I think it can be done. Attachment: Roundabout Snip.JPG |
