Above is the stock angled belt hook.

The angle is actually in the pedestal, the plastic piece between the Stick and the belt hook. The angle tilts the fretboard slightly up, toward the player.

When you shave the plastic pedestal down with a grinder, you can eliminate the angle. This lets the Stick hang straighter relative to the player's body. It also makes the fretboard a little harder to look at while you're playing, but for some players, it's a more comfortable position for the left wrist.

I have the shaved pedestal (non-angled belt hook) on both of my Sticks. It requires a second short screw for secure mounting.

God I love this site. I was just wondering about a non-angled hook, and here's a post telling me how to do it.

Stick Enterprises can also supply the non-angled belt hook pedistal, that's how I got mine.

Here is a verbal explanation. While wearing your Stick, imagine you are standing on the face of a clock. With the traditional belt hook, the fingerboard is pointing about towards 2:00. With the non-angled belt hook, the fingerboard would be pointing more towards 12:00.

You can see the effect of this by wearing your Stick in front of a mirror. Finger some notes on the bass side with your left hand and with your right hand, turn your instrument counter clockwise. As you turn it, it will be harder to look down and see your left hand on the fret board, but as you do it you will see the angle on your left wrist decrease. That decrease in wrist angle is what sold me on the non-angled belt hook.

The mirror is also valuable to see how Stick height effects your hands.

Post Re: angled belt hook vs non-angled belt hook
This is interesting.. I've had problems with RSI for 8 years, especially in the left elbow & wrist. I play keys and bass. It hasn't put me out of the game but it has made me more conscious of posture, warm-up, and the amount of time I play without a break. Neither has it put me off taking up the Stick - I'll be receiving my Railboard soon - but I know I'm going to need to be careful with the angle of my left hand.

Does anyone know if the non-angled pedestal is a stock item at SE? What sort of price?

I think I'd be wise to try both - not sure if I should do this at the beginning.. but I don't want to hold up my Railboard shipping by adding a non stock item to the order...!

This adjustment is important enough to some players, that I think both pedestals should come with every new instrument. SE has in the past sent me free ones for the instruments I bought from them. Recently I requested one for the second-hand railboard I just bought and it cost $30.

While we're on the subject, an extra belt hook should be included, too (just the piece that attaches to the pedestal, not the whole belt hook assembly). That piece is going to break eventually and a spare should be at hand.

Hi Randy,

People's experiences can vary. I've logged many thousands of hours practicing and performing and never broken one of these, though I have seen them break on others, usually hen people play seated with the instrument on a belt that's tight against the body.

If you wat to use a belt when seated just loosen it up enough that theweight of the instrument is on the chair, and there is some play in the positioning...

I like the straight hook too. I used some washers to just test it at first, but it stayed this way.

It's harder to look, but the wrist of the left hand has a more relaxed / natural position.
I've started to train myself not to look for the last year and I'm making fair progress at blind playing.

Probably it would be best to get the correct hook and ditch the washers, but I haven't still gotten to it...
