Post Tuning a PASV4 to a Stickup
Possible odd question ahead:

What adjustments would I make to a PASV4 pickup to bring it more inline with a Stickup's tone and response?

Thanks.

Equally odd answer to RB w/4 steps:

- Detach and slide out your PASV4.
- Remove its rear cover plate.
- Attach Stickup to rear plate aligning pole pieces with strings.
- Fasten down the new assembly with shorter screws in the existing holes.

You now have a height adjustable pickup module that fits exactly into the larger "Block" channel and sounds exactly like a Stickup.

Hope you'll pardon my snide humor-with-a-message.

Heh! No apologies necessary. I had actually thought about that option. I'll contact Cambria.

Post Re: Tuning a PASV4 to a Stickup
I had a Stick with a PASV4 and I dialed in a sound I thought approached the sound of a Stickup. As I recall it involved just the neck pickups on both sides but I couldn't tell you more than that at this point because I don't have that instrument anymore. I traded it in on an instrument with a Stickup a couple years ago. I do love the PASV4 and it has a rich, hot punchy sound with a lot of tweakability. In fact I'm taking delivery of a Grand Stick with a PASV4 one of these days and I'm looking forward to having 2 similar instruments with different voices. Once I have both in hand I'm gonna do some serious A/B comparisons and recordings. I may have more to tell you about your question at that point.

Hi,

Years ago, I designed a PASV4 housing with coil positions close to that of a Stickup, see attachment. A that time, the prototype shop of our company needed a test object for the new CNC milling machine, so I had it routed from POM for free :-)
You can hear the result here:

(my goodness, this is 11 years ago!)
I do think it sounds closer to the Stickup, although it will never sound exactly the same.
Later on, I built the pickups back into the normal housing, because I have a Stick with Stickup, too. So now I have a wider pallet of sounds to choose from... I built another housing with 3 EMG's, which I use mostly these days.
Pickups are highly a matter of taste, the Stickup, PASV4 and ACTV2 are all great modules.
Regards,
Jaap

Smooth sound JK, maybe with a touch of compression on the melody side. (I hear that "kick" attack.) Memorable song, too, with spiritual overtones. And finally, the execution is professional with polish. Many thanks, Emmett.

Thans you for the kind words, Emmett!
Hope you don’t mind me experimenting with the pickups, basses and Sticks are not safe in our house:-)
Just this week I realized that the Stingray basses sound quite similar to the Stickup, and that the Musicman hit the market appr. 2 years after the Stick. Any chance that Leo Fender got inspired by the Stickup???
Best regards,
Jaap
