Post Broken string just before Interlochen
Hello, I got new strings for Interlochen and things kept getting in the way and I finally got around to changing them today. I have an SG12 and I’m using the Mirrored 4ths Piano tuning with light strings. That means string number 1 is the tiniest string gauge I’ve ever seen. I think it might be a 6.5. As I was tuning it up to pitch it broke. I did not over tighten it, I was using a good tuner and comparing it to the other strings constantly. This is a new tuning for me and I don’t have a backup #1 string of that gauge. Getting one from SE before next Tuesday might be possible but risky.

Since it’s a tiny plain string can I use a guitar string? An SG12 is the scale length of a guitar and I am hoping I can go to my local music store that sells singles and buy one. They might not have a 6.5 but maybe a 7 would work. Thoughts? Experience?

Thanks,

-Eric

I am checking with stores that sell guitars and the lightest gauge for them is an 8, or .008”. I suspect that is too thick to get as high as that tuning needs. I might need to try it anyway.

Sigh, there’s always something.

I imagine an 8 is slightly thicker than optimal for that high A, but get a few anyway as they are hardly expensive. If the string is 6.5 then a 7 should do in a pinch.

Daddario do online string singles as low as 7 gauge, you may be able to get them delivered in time - http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDetai ... el_Singles

Amazon also have a lot of daddarios single strings so I’d suggest there and using Amazon prime if possible.

Best of luck!

I need to order some guitar strings. Check Strings By Mail, which is based out of Traverse City. If you find what you want I’ll add it to my order. Since I live in TC I’m sure I’ll get it right away. I’ve ordered individual strings from them many times.

Thanks, Steven. I sent you a PM over in FB.

Good Luck !!
I broke a high D with my 10 string Ironwood [the newer one...] last weekend, and same thing, I was no where near the proper pitch, so rather than keep breaking strings I'm now looking at changing the tuning of that particular string [position # 1] to possibly the same as # 3, as this is how it's tuned right now, and I don't want to break any more strings either, as the light strings are super hard for me to get, and I don't want to keep pestering Emmett....

For reference, rotosound do a .007, and they are also long enough strings for a stick. D'addarios I only found .008s, they are also long enough for the first couple of strings but 5cm shorter than the rotosounds. Ernie balls are too short

My Stick is an SG12 and guitar strings are the right length. One thing I’m curious about is will they sound the same. I know they won’t for wound strings, it’s the plain ones.

I would think - hope - that they would.
I'm about to find out myself real soon, as I need to do just that.
