Post Looking for new fretboard markers
My wenge Stick has too dark fretboard markers. I will have to use it for concerts and obviously need to give it new brighter markers. Suggestions?

Paint? Stickers?

fingerboard tape?
you can get it in different colors and it doesn't gum up the wood

I think Greg Howard said he has used it

just an example:

Per,

I feel your pain. The only drawback my Padouk are black markers. A couple of years ago I put snowflake stickers on them.

Very thin and sturdy. In the meantime, the fingerboard has been cleaned several times, and until today only one sticker has been removed. They have completely lost their abalone color, but they hold tight.

Mine come from this store:

There are also stripes that perfectly simulate the markers from the newer Sticks.

I think you can use the markers violin players who just starting use as markers

Thank you for the inspiring suggestions! I think I will look for some ultra-white 1/8" Small Side Marker Dots. Or maybe some glossy lacquer to paint small dots on the side.

I would have loved having that properly in place back when I was booked to play Stick in a corner in total darkness during an art exhibition where the public was given flashlights to seek out the paintings, wandering around the darkened halls. I didn't see very well where to tap and worse was that every person entering "my room" began by flashing the light into my face to see "what's going on with that music?"
(Blinded By The Light... I didn't play that cover but the title perfectly describes my gig experience) :-)

I sharpie the face (uh, player) side of the higher of the two marker fret(s). It lasts a long time, is easily re-doable and is usually quite distinguishable from non-sharpie'd frets. Quick glance, you're there.

Inlays are not usually immediately visible. They're for everyone else.

btw I also always thought that the fret bars were kind of too stand-outish, maybe too thick, maybe too plain. over-bored.

Just want to play the instrument, not expend too much energy to look at it.
Busy enough as it is. ;>)

Yup, white fretboard/violin tape works great. Been using it on my padauk Grand with black linear inlays for about 15 years, after I started performing and quickly realized the inlays almost disappear under certain lighting. I think Jim Reilly, who was working for SE at the time I ordered the instrument, warned me about this - I believe I naively replied that I didn’t imagine myself ever performing live!
