It is often said that a lie repeated several times turns into truth...at least for the one who lies. Sometimes I hear mistakes on musical improvisations and they repeat regularly. Notice the same thing?

I'm not entitrely sure how well the concepts of 'mistake' and 'improvisation' sit together?

Hear something that sounds wrong to you once in a piece then maybe it was a thing that didn't work out & won't be repeated, or maybe just a difference in taste with the player.

Hear something that sounds wrong to you repeated several times in a piece then it seems lilkely to be a difference in taste with the player?

Music is very subjective...

Hey all,
Well, I can think of an example in which Thelonious Monk is improvising on a live version of his "Straight No Chaser". He suddenly plays a very dissonant cluster of notes...it's kind of jarring to hear...and then he repeats that cluster again and again...until I no longer hear dissonance, but rather I hear Monk's personality coming through.

It took me a while to realize that Monk wasn't making a mistake, he was composing! LOL!

I love Monk for that!

Best wishes to all. Bill

Improvising is real time composing.

Composing is slow time improvising.

Well, sort of... LOL!

There are no bad notes. Only bad resolutions. Those who have their shit together can make ANY note make sense if they justify it harmonically by the following note. The rest of us just make mistakes.

I don’t know if it was on this board that I saw this, but I saw an interview with Herbie Hancock describing how he hit a completely wrong chord while performing with Miles and Miles just on-the-fly changed his line so the chord fit. Victor Wooten advises to use the chromatic scale to improvise in your practice because there are no “wrong” notes – everything is at most only a semitone away from a “right” note. Treat the “wrong” note as a passing or neighbor tone, and voila – it works.

Isn't that what happens, too, on "Right Off" on Jack Johnson when Miles enters with his solo?
