so i purchased my first stick so this is a newb 101 question.. I have watched a couple videos and some guys are sitting down.. It looks like they have some type of piece they are using to put where usually you would put on your belt...

THis enables them to sit down somewhat comfortably to play the stick.. sorry this is a little scattered..

Does anyone know what i am talking about..

Bob removed the belthook, and used the bolts to secure a homemade sitting support brace.

Most of us just rest the belt hook on the edge of the chair. Padding of some kind, even a piece of foam, seems to keep the belthook from slipping.

I play sitting all of the time. At home I have nice leather lounge chairs that work perfectly.

Playing live I have a modified throne like this:

With a belt hook rest bolted on the front.

Try different chairs, try a waist belt adjusted for sitting, experiment.

I use a wood coat hanger onto the belthook and once you found the good one for your body it work very well.

I always found lap bars to be too rigid.

A loose belt allows you to rest the belt-hook on the front of your chair, and has more give in the instrument's position as you move around. The weight of the instrument is on the chair, not on your legs.

You can use this method for sitting on a chair or stool (as shown in The Stick Book, vol 1):


With this loose belt the vertical positioning of the instrument is about what it would be when standing, so you'll have consistency in the instrument's position whether you are seated or standing.

I use a piece of bamboo about 2' long. David Parr gave it to me after I watched him use one at the Heartland Stick Seminar in 2007. Actually, he sent me two, one for the Stick, and one to beat off the groupies. I've never used the second one. I also use a belt sometimes. I pretty much play exclusively sitting down.

Hello Isaac - I second Greg's method of using a loose belt. I switched to a sitting position about a year back and have found it a plus plus experience. It allows me to concentrate with more focus on the music. My Rosewood Grand has freedom to move with the music.

I spent some time with Bob C. this last year. When he's playing at Arts Festivals he puts in a lot of time so he uses the horizontal stick to change up on his playing stance. (Get some new muscles working for an hour or two!) I'd say try every way of playing the Stick. You're bound to find new musical paths with each position.
