Anything else I missed? I would remove Stick from the list, since it's a brand name and therefore can't serve as a generic term. And I was totally kidding about "fretfield".

There are many classes within the phylum Musicaeinstrumentum. Although there was some controversy over the placement of the chapman stick, it is currently placed in the class Ligamendies. Some researchers still believe the stick should be placed in the class Impingoides. New research using DNA hybridization techniques is needed. The similarities to Impingoides have not gone unnoticed, and so the stick resides in the order Impingoligamends. This order also contains other difficult to classify species such as the Pianoforte. Sticks and other tapping guitar type instruments make up the family Tactussonitus. There are several genera inside this family, two of note are Chapmanus, and the closely related Stienbergerus. Although the members of these genera are physically distinct, some researchers have suggested all members belong to the genus Chapmanus. Within the genus Chapmanus exist several species. The genus includes the species decemligamen, grandis, mugio, decemgrandis, altus and dudecimaltus. Chapmanus decemligamen appears to be the oldest species, possessing the greatest genetic variation and number of subspecies. However, new subspecies are still being discovered. Truly hilarious, Varnon, Especially dudecimaltusThanks. On a serious note, I think I like tapstring. It has a nice sound to it. Also I think it is good that it would easily fit other closely related instruments that are not guitar-like. I am mainly speaking of the harpejji. Yeah I'd go for tapstring, or tapstring instrument.

Fretfield = obvious winner.

It would be nice to codify a name since the "other guys" are trying to spread the term "touchstyle".

Re: What *kind* of instrument is the Stick?
We were talking about this subject at the dinner table last night. My son brought up a good point that The Stick is not only in the string family. Like the piano, The Stick is both part of the string and percussion family of instruments. It bridges the gap between stings and percussion. That just might be the primary thing that distinguishes The Stick from the guitar. It's the percussive nature of tapping the strings that we touched on earlier (piano are struck, drums are struck).
So using a descriptive word that suggests both families (strings and percussion) is a plus.

LADC wrote: So using a descriptive word that suggests both families (strings and percussion) is a plus. like "taptar"? "tar" is long established as in musical nomenclature to mean "string" Maybe we really should base our decision on some kind of etymological precedent: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_(lute) http://rosalieee.wordpress.com/2010/09/ ... ar-dotara/I can't see calling a class of instruments "tapstring" by itself. You would always have to add "instruments" to the name in order for people to get what you're talkng about, which defeats the whole purpose of having a "concise" name.. "Taptar" resembles many other extant names for stringed instruments, and I think they all have frets too, so there's a fairly strong etymological basis for it. Is there any other name for a class of instruments that uses "string" in this way? I don't think so. I voted for taptar. The other one I would vote for (if I could vote for 2) is tapboard. mad_monk wrote: What is different about the instrument, that makes it essentially something other than a specialized type of guitar? Please be specific.
Mad Monk. the answer to Randy's excellent question is the playing method: "tapping".

Re: What *kind* of instrument is the Stick?
Personally I feel that Tapstring, or Tapstring instrument is the best term. It takes into account other less guitar like instruments like the Kelstone and the Harpeji, that are arguably more keyboard like, but still use the two hand tapping method.
