Re: create a chapman stick
Hi,
approximately 18 years ago, when my budget didn't allow the purchase of a real Stick, I built my own Stick copy. For wood, I used wenge; woods like maple, mahogany, paduak or rosewood are also good, stable materials. The truss rod is a piece of M5 threaded round steel. The frets are jumbo Jim Dunlop frets (a height of appr. 1.3 mm should play well). The tuners are standard guitar tuners, and I made the belt hook from aluminum. I made the bridge from sheet metal, shaped like the slide blocks on a real Stick. For the nut, I made set screws, similar to those on "pre-Flaps" Sticks. I used passive EMG pickups, but these are very dull sounding. The EMG FT pickups (used in the ACTV-2 pickup module) will definitely sound better... So, only the pickups, frets and tuners are specific guitar parts, and the rest is basic wood and metal materials. A warning: you need to be an experienced DIYer in order to make anything playable. I built a number of basses before building this instrument, and still my real Sticks play (and sound) MUCH better than the home made one. Especially the fretwork needs to be perfect, or otherwise you'll end up with a hard to play instrument... Good luck, Jaap

Tritone LOL. Admittedly, there is all of what you say in the post, but there is also years of witnessing people throw time and money into trying to short cut the expense of buying a Chapman Stick. I think in the long run, you'd do better, just raising the money to get a real Stick, than trying to reinvent the wheel. Thank you Tritone in bringing me a memory of my daughters' teen-aged years, where they'd bring me up short in a moment's notice.

I also wonder just who Tritone is? I bet he's somebody nobody here on this web page would expect! Ahhh Tritone, you do keep things colorful don't you!

Abusive tone aside, and while I don't think D. *meant* to be condescending, I do think the reply was rather flippant and contributed nothing helpful to the thread and the OP's query.
Jaap's post was much more constructive and useful, IMHO.

Sounds about right to me.on the subject of the thread... I thought Walter's and Jaap's posts were both pretty useful. If you want to "create" a Chapman Stick you have to go through a real process of innovation (as far as I can see only one person has done that, Emmett). If you want to make a copy of one that actually plays well, none of the parts except the tuning machines are available off the shelf, so you'll have to settle for guitar parts. good luck.
