Post subject:  New Stick details revealed at Southern California Seminar

Emmett broke out a prototype for the new Chapman Stick today at the Southern California Stick Seminar. He mentioned to the class that he was keeping the details regarding this instrument under wraps even from his own staff - up until today!

Here is what we learned about the instrument:
1. The instrument is Aluminum
2. The prototype had a bolt on headstock, but the finished product will have a headstock that die-cut just like the body. I expect it will be made from a separate piece and then bolted to the body
3. There are a number of different colors, the one that he displayed was deep lustrous midnight blue with black hardware
4. There are updates to the Villex pick-up. The model that he had only a pair of the pickups, unlike the 4 module set that loads out on the PASV-4.
5. The initial offering will only be 10 string models
6. The fretboard of the instrument will be a 1/4 inch less wide than a Grand
7. There is increased space in between the strings adjacent to the top and bottom, allowing for less margin of error
8. The fret rails of the instrument are cast as part of the fretboard - let me repeat that - the rails and the fretboard are one.
9. Hipshot tuners were the tuners of choice
10. The scale of the instrument will revert to the 34" length
11. His prototype had 5 additional frets on the melody side in the higher register, it is expected that there will be only 2 extra frets in the final version
12. There will be room on the instrument for MIDI
13. Significant updates to truss in that it is adjustable in four places
14. The back of the neck is scooped / scalloped on the side to within a 1/4 inch of the truss (see picture) making the neck extremely thin
15. The point of the rails are not as fine, the best way to define this is to think of them at a 75 degree angle instead of a 90 degree angle.

I think that is it. I am hoping that some of my class mates will jump in where I have left something out.

This instrument and the repeatable processes required to manufacture them are going to take Stick Enterprises out of the boutique custom instrument business and into the mainstream. SE will be able to manufacture more instruments, in less time and offer them at a lower price than current models.

Good thing I just paid off a whole bunch of debt. Time to pile it back on!

This is extemely interesting! As always with Emmet, pure genius at work.
I own two basses with an aluminum body: one would think that the sound should be hard and metallic, but the opposite is true. The sound is warm and round, with loads of sustain.
Aluminum is also extremly durable and very eco-friendly, in that it is easily recyclable.

Can't wait for a Grand model, I'll make sure I get one of the first ones :D

P.S. more photos please!!!

This is the only part of the design I don't get. Wonder why Mr. Chapman went with a thin/scooped neck?

Well, thanks for the features. Sounds OK but I'm not that excited. Assuming it's a musical instrument, what about the overall sound? ;)

Ha, ha... that comment cracked me up here! Wondering about the tuning. Does it go as low as a 36" Stick?

I would think Emmett would be going for the least amount of mass and go with a very minimal design. I love it when new non-wood Sticks come out. I have had a polycarb and now an XBL .
I'll get this one for my son instead of an electric guitar, yeah, that's it.

Very interested in seeing some more pics !

Wow! Like others here, I'm not sure I understand all these changes yet, but Emmett is a genius and I'm really excited to learn more about where this instrument is headed. Definitely smells like a quantum leap to me.
