Yes, your mistake was to use the opening tag but forgetting about the closing tag for the quoted part. The closing tag looks like [/quote]. Both tags has to be in place for the quotation mojo to manifest in the reader's browser.

Thanks - I had fun doing it - took my mind off of "not having a stick yet"

As far as the quotes - I was using the quote button on the page. I was not inserting quote objects before and after.

My mistake was that I had the BBCodes disabled in my options. Thanks for your help (I also gave answer in another post - sorry for the duplicate).
