Post Finish maintenance of dyed Bamboo instruments?
I've soon had my SG-12 for two years and am a bit concerned about the red paint getting worn off at some spots. At one fret position the light bamboo material is now fully displayed. Is this bad? Does the color used for Bamboo protect the wood in some way? Should I put some Danish Oil on the now uncovered spot? Can one protect the dyed Bamboo finish with beeswax, as is recommended for oil finished guitars?

Great question (since I do not own one) ... I would assume ... (from their pictures) that the bamboo is stained and not painted. If so - you have worn the bamboo away???

PS: I feel a new bamboo stick could be in my distant future........ (I am praying to the "reserved production stick list" Gods, OOOOHHHHH, "something bright colored, in bamboo, would be cool")

Well, I thought the bright colors on light bamboo was some kind of "penetrative dye" but nevertheless I now have one naked spot on my SG-12, sized like a pinky nail. I didn't wear down the Bamboo, just the colored surface finish.

I don't mind the looks, but I'm wondering if some protective factor is lost with the cool looking relics?

Maybe SE can send you a small bottle of touch-up stain?

Hello Per: We've just mixed a small bottle of "deep sunset" red (as noted in my setup log for your SG-12) and we'll send it off to you. Just touch up the exposed spot(s) with a Q-Tip or tissue paper and if it's still too light in tone, add a 2nd coat after a couple hours.

Yours was made in Feb. 2011 and probably has a couple coats of Danish oil over the dye. Since then, we've been using two polyurethane clear-coats over the dye for a harder, more protective finish.

Yours was one of our early dyed light bamboo Sticks and unfortunately my notes on top coatings weren't too explicit then. After you've gotten the touch-up color and tone that matches, I'd suggest you rub in a little Danish oil or its variant, Watco, on top to help seal the spot.

All the Best, Emmett.

Yes, "authentic relification" is totally ok with me. I was just wondering a little, since my SG-12 has in one and a half year reached the same status as my Stratocaster from 1980 :-)) But from this discussion I have understood that there is no danger lurking, so I'm all happy with Emmett's suggestion to fill in some new color where it has worn off (both sides of the neck are rapidly whitening...). I already have Danish Oil here.
