Thank you for taking the time to do this Greg as it was because of this video that I realized the Stickup plays a large part in the sound I most love about the Stick.

You're welcome, Ric.

Emmett's original pickup brings the whole spectrum to light. I love it, too. There is a three-dimensional quality to the sound that's as "acoustic" as any electric instrument could be. I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing more videos from you.

Probably the most interesting Stick pickup I've seen and heard was at the Anaheim Stick Night a couple weeks ago. Tom Greisgraber had a hybrid module with half a Stickup on the bass strings and half an ACTV-2 on the melody side of his 12 string. Also it had no volume pots or any controls whatsoever - just pure wide open pickups straight out to the output jack. Let's just say he had things covered very nicely. The bass had loads of whack and twang while the melody side was sophisticated, smooth and very HiFi. And before everyone starts pestering Emmett for one of their own - Tom told me it's a one off experiment and was such a pain in the ass to build that we're not likely to see another one.

Shucks! I say...

Very interesting! The best of both sides. I have a guitar with two Alumitones and I'm pretty sure they would go well together with a Stick. One day I want to build me a Stick pickup house with Alumitones.

Those hybrids were born out of a conversation Tom and I had at a seminar in San Diego. The first instrument I had with one in it was rosewood 10-string #4965.

This was my first performance with that instrument:

I still use that hybrid as my primary pickup. but when Emmett explained the building process to me I completely understood why he didn't want to make more of them.

For starters, they are deeper than the regular Stickup, so the instrument has to be routed out. There's not room for volume controls, and the housing is too brittle to be machined easily, making the process of adding in the pickup and the electronics very time-consuming. The housing has to be the injection molded housing in order to get the right shielding and tone out of the Stickup portion.

In short, it would cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to do them. I have one for my wenge Grand and one for my rosewood 10-string.

If you could create a shell that matched the dimensions of the ACTV housing, you could simply place them in that, as the ACTV simply contains two standard sized EMG FT "Single coil" Pickups. If you were feeling adventurous, you could just got an actual ACTV and do it that

I think I'll pop by a couple of flee markets and look for the most crazy cigarr box on the planet and rework it into the appropriate The Block dimensions. Not an urgent project though, just one of those things I keep in mind as an "insurance for eventual boring rainy days". :-) I can hardly imagine something more useful to me in performance than the regular PASV4.

Greg's Big Bang is simple epic, isn't it!!! It's 13 minutes but not one too many. Must have been a great concert night.

"Epic", yes Per, but the explanation is not so simple. As I remember Bob's 2003 "World Stick Seminar", the sound men for the Stick Night portion didn't show up (the only glitch in Bob's well organized event) and Greg took on an unfamiliar concert sound board singlehandedly. About 70 Stick players from around the world attended and the San Jose public was also invited. Greg had to make it work for all racks, pedalboards, mikes and direct Stick inputs.

By the time it was his turn to play, Greg was tense and as I recollect, definitely not in a musical mood. There was much tension to be released and in true character he did it constructively on stage - ergo "The Big Bang", starting off with a bang (and its cosmic microwave background).

If you use an Arturo Fuente Opus X box, the result will be (unofficially) priceless.

I would wear the scent of those cigars as a cologne if I could.

Greg's Big Bang-thanks for the explanation, Emmett. that's one funny piece of music, Greg. i dig the uncrossed hands. kitchen sink-you can really get yer frustrations out on the Stick. i've had my housemates come into my room after a "brain enema" and say "What the f*** was THAT?" very theraputic, the Stick. beats payin a shrink.
