Post Building Phase Dance - Part 1
Hi, everyone.

I'm learning Phase Dance with Steve Adelson's help and based on popular demand (OK, only Mike Kemp) I'm going to document my learning process. I'm asking my advanced programming students to document their learning this school year and this is my way of keeping up with them. Here's the first installment. All feedback is most welcome.

Thanks,

-Eric

Very cool Idea.
I'll be interested to see how this evolves as working out arrangments on the Stick is still difficult for me.
I guess the demand for this thread just increased by 100% :D

Thanks for putting this up Eric.

Eric

(Bloody echo again)

Great post Eric.
If I may, besides the physical playing of the "correct" notes, it's important , as we discussed, to understand the polychord concept that Pat uses here. The basic chord here is Bm7. Yet that intro riff is a rhythmic rendering of an A Major and D Major triad. Great concept and feel.
Looking forward to our further exploratory Skype adventures.

Thanks, Steve. I'm hoping to have made good progress before the next one. I have two mottos for this school year, "Play every day", and, "No". Seems to be working so far.

What browser/OS are you using. These videos are HTML 5 only, but I can try to expand if it's not IE.

Wow, that dynamic drop at 6:42 is incredible!
I found myself wondering why they weren't showing Mark Egan, until they did, and I saw his clown shirt.
Seriously, that was a brilliant clip.
I hate to say it, but my ears tell me that the transcription from the book is accurate. What you're playing isn't "wrong," but just in terms of voicing the original notes, it sounds like the book is spot on.
But my ears have been known to be wrong a whole 'lotta times.
I'll be following this. You're a brave dude just to work on this gorgeous tune, let alone let everyone in on the process so publicly. You deserve our kudos and our ears.

Listen to Pat right at the beginning. The high note he's playing is going up and down. The highest note he's playing is not the A. It alternates from C# to D. Here's a clip. His top note is moving and it's not A.

Eric.!

Great blog. Didn't you come up with the virtual note tracker thingy, it would be great to see that on your vids.

So much to learn from the chordings and choice of voicing.

Cheers
