Been trying to play this song for about a half an hour now this morning and I can play the first part without too many mistakes(mostly in the bass side) at a much slower pace(78 bpm). The 5th in the bass is what is driving me bonkers at the moment. Such a subtle difference, yet when trying to put it together with the melody side it feels like the difference between apples and cacti!

I'm surprised that it is so challenging, it doesn't seem like it ought to be.

I don't know where the original concept for the beat derives. I am getting more of a Bossa Nova vibe. Maybe it is the ride that brings it to mind.

It's just a Pat quasi-latin tune. He does whatever he feels like doing.

Back @Eric- I enjoyed the song and the effort you put into it before, but now that I have actually tried it, I appreciate it even more. Thanks again for posting.

Mike

Thanks, Mike. Doing these and posting them is keeping me going. It's good to have a community when trying to learn something. Learning something hard all alone is no fun and frequently results in giving up.

Eric..!!

Thanks for receiving that so graciously and enthusiastically.....~!

Learning from a community of friends who happen to be pros is the best way to learn.

I'm just trying this now and yes, I totally get it... This groove wants to speed up like a bastard.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one.

It seems like if you hold on to the pivot note (2nd finger) and jump off that easily it's a little easier.. This is a significant challenge, more so than it first looks.

Bravo Sir..!

That is also good to hear. I was feeling like a pure beginner trying to tackle this. I think I am starting to emphasize the 2nd finger playing the A more. It seems to help keep the rhythm going.

P.S. The thing about metronomes and internalising time.., just remember it serves as reminder to your own internal clock. It won't give that to you, sounds obvious I know and your probably not that far gone, but many people who don't have a strong rhythm background, perhaps unconsciously make that assumption.

This is a really good thought. I wonder how well I could hold the tempo without a drum track or metronome?

Oh.!!! Try this:
Ta ki ta Ta ki ta ta Ta ki ta ki ta Ta ki ti ta.

Hope that helps.

Stickist regards.

This is just awesome! I will try it and I have not encountered this technique before. I think more study is in order. Is this the system?

Thanks for all your input and time.

Well, certainly "driving me bonkers" was a slight exageration. But different people struggle with different things, I guess. I think what was giving me trouble was that the groove(in the bass) is so similar to something I already play, that my hand kept wanting to resort to the other bass line(Dang muscle memory! :o ). I think I've got it now and may try to record myself playing it later this evening when my kids go to bed.

Duuuuudee....! As Bob would say.

This is all very cool.

Takedimi seems to be a good system, a way of condensing the centuries old knowledge so that kids especially can use it without too much trouble.

There are so many good sites out there with this stuff. This one seems to be a good summary of many of the styles and approaches we're talking about.

Pete Lockett and Benny Grebb, both great exponents and fun aren't they....

I was mainly coming from a North Indian perspective, simply because that's what I've been exposed to.

Back @ ERic, Looking forward to more vids from a Stick veteran.

Cheers mayne...!!!

Sorry to be thread Nazi..

Just wanted to mention.. I saw Karnataka College of percussion in the mid 90s and the singer had better tal chops tan the percussionists....!!

It was one of the scariest most beautiful things I'd ever seen.
