My SG12 doesn't seem to be in tune from low frets to high frets. Intervals are off no matter how carefully I play. So I think it may need some setup work. I would rather not be without the instrument multiple weeks so sending it back to the 'factory' is not my first choice. If I find a quality guitar tech locally, would they be able to take care of things? Randy |

My advice would be to try to Skype it first (as Jon has said) or wait until the Stick seminar if you can. Greg has some good set up techniques and what to look for. -Samson |

Hi Randy, I recently experienced something similar on my SG12, and the I changed the strings and the intonation is much better. I'm not certain, but perhaps the scale length means the strings get funkier when they get old. How old are the strings on yours? As far as having someone else look at it, it would probably be better if we could do it over skype as has been suggested. Guitar techs usually know nothing about The Stick and will mess the setup us quite handily. |

The SG12 is approx. a year old. I'm the 2nd owner, but I think these are original strings. |

kev - Wow! Wouldn't have thought. Is this because they are light gauge, or do you change that frequently for all? OK. I've got a new set, so will give it a go. It's been some years since I've restrung so will refer to some other threads I've run across here for advice. Greg, will give new strings a go before contacting you about reworking the setup. yep, old strings are always bad for intonation. The frets create dents in the strings, so that the string length is not determined by the fret tip, but by a location somewhere on the side of the fret. It's only tenths of millimeters, but enough to mess things up. Intonation is a simple process, by the way. First make sure the truss rod and string height are in good order, so your Stick plays lightly. Then, take a good tuner, and tune each string accurately at, say, the 7th fret. Then play the same note one octave up (19th fret). If the note is sharp now, the bridge slide block should move towards the tail of the Stick. If the note on the 19th fret is flat, move the slide blockk towards the headstock. Repeat the process for each string. That's all. Jaap |

I change them that frequently and would never go past 6 months. I am no expert though so please keep that in mind. You wait and see how good that SG sounds when you're done! cheers, kev |

Randy, I change strings on my 10-string Stick fairly regularly as a matter of course. I have mediums on her and change the bass side every 6 months and the melody side every 3 months. I do like the sound of new strings, and have not had a problem with intonation, so I'm sure a new set of strings are the answer. BTW, there's a good piece in the FAQ section on changing strings if you need a refresher. -Marc- |
