As a previous guitarist, I found that everything I knew translated very easily to my right hand and even though my left can produce thundering bass, I like the ability to go a little lower with my right hand. I'm still practicing techniques that incorporate my right hand getting as low as possible, but I feel that the MR helps in my case.

Well, while this thread was going on I've migrated back to MR, and I'm determined to stay with it for awhile.

Hi Greg,

I know it's early days in the poll, but are you surprised at the seemingly low preference for Baritone Melody, given the number of 10-strings listed? A few years ago I would have guessed it was perhaps the most widely used Stick tuning.

On face value, MR tuning is the "easiest" to become familiar with, which could be a factor in its popularity? (I'm yet to be convinced that it offers real advantages, unless the player has a regular problem with the hands "colliding").

It will be interesting to read your conclusions when a few more votes come in.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy,

MR is a fine tuning, and for the 10-string player, it definitely has advantages over the Classic tuning, having to do with opening up the hand position relationships. Baritone Melody has advantages (more overlap) and disadvantages (doesn't go as high) compared to both.

I've played 10 and 12 string instruments in all these tunings, and I find I prefer where the melody notes lie on the Classic/Baritone fretboard compared to the Matched Reciprocal fretboard. But that's just me.

I had originally wanted to do the Poll with the categories broken down this way:

10-string Classic
10-string Matched Reciprocal
10-string Baritone Melody
10-string Deep Bari Melody
10-String Dual Bass Reciprocal

And then a set for 12-string, but we run out of 10 possible answers pretty quickly, so perhaps a different approach is called for... I think there should be a separate poll for each string configuration. That's the only way to get the info desired. I'll try to get it together today.

Hi Greg,

I probably should have qualified my comments by saying that I used MR tuning for a while but found that I also prefer the Classic/BM positions. My first impression of MR was that it would make things easier because of the string relationships being "the same" on both sides. In practice, I haven't found that to be the case.

I take your point on BM tuning, but I'm still a bit surprised at the low vote count.

Cheers,
Andy

Greetings Stickists,
I'll be talking with SE next week discussing setup of my ironwood. I've been reading some about tunings and still trying to wrap my head around this one. As a newbie coming from a keyboard background and never really learning guitar, would there be a particular tuning that would allow me to translate some of my keyboard experience ? This is probably just hopeful thinking.

Another 10-string with deep baritone melody/ standard bass here.

Edit: Sorry, I just noticed that this is an old thread, unearthed today...
