What's your main mode of play?
For some time now I've been curious about something. How many people here are really pursuing two-part music, and how many use the instrument to play individual parts, one at a time.
Most of my instructional material has been geared toward the former, but I also have some for the latter, and perhaps should make more.
Please take a moment to answer the poll.
Thanks in advance

Re: What's your main mode of play?
I've removed the belt hook system from my vintage stick. I practice by lying down with the stick across my chest. I play with my eyes closed and I play mostly by ear.
The tune is in my head and I slowly work out the notes. I play both bass and melody at the same time.
I noticed that many musicians cross their hands over. I use whatever works best at the time. Sometimes I play both hands on the melody side. Sometimes I play both hands on the bass side. Often I play only on the sides where my hands are. Sometimes, I play on the opposite side my hands are.
At the end of the day, the stick is my way to relax and unwind. I don't ever need an audience. I really enjoy playing this instrument. I play music for my own personal enjoyment.
The Stick has been a dominant part of my life since purchasing it. My saxophones, guitars and keyboards are idle. Eventually, I will get back to my other instruments. but for now, I spend a lot of time, just getting a feel for things.

Re: What's your main mode of play?
Yeah, I am still getting my feet wet. Total beginner, but the pieces are falling in to place. I make a lot of mistakes, and sound, ummm well, like a beginner but here is what I am after... My vision of what I would like to do, though falls into the "multiple parts" category I suppose?
That left hand... it should play bass lines. And it should also play some chord stuff. And it is gonna have to be percussive at the same time. Oh, and it is going to have to play some melodic stuff in between, and every now and then...
The right hand...it handles melodic duties. But it gets to do voice led chords also. And "just" chords. Some rhythmic percussive stuff also... the thumb is going to have to carry it's weight also...
Both hands need to learn to be spontaneous also... And my brain needs to find a clever way to trick it's "crew" into working together on one instrument; not taking sides if you know what I mean...
So yeah, I am practicing towards all of this. I see small gains daily. Realistically, I foresee a good decade of hardcore playing before I get this sorted out... good thing it's a lot of fun!

Re: What's your main mode of play?
Why anyone would play single parts on a Stick boggles me. I know it sounds cool, but its not the way the instrument is supposed to be played. Akin to buying a piano then tieing your right hand behind your back.
cheers, kev

Re: What's your main mode of play?
Depends on the application. generally in band context, its two hands on the bass side, doing runs and fills. Makes me sound like a bass assed bassist! I also at times will do some chord comping and even lead lines over, buts it primarily as a bassist since guitarists are so damn sensitive to you invading their turf!
But I also do the two hand left hand accompaniment, right hand melody lines. Like you said, there is a ton of info on that already. (ok not a TON, but a lot in comparison.)

Re: What's your main mode of play?
Two Part play- which sounds so ominous and "i'll never be able to do that" but if you played a single bass note and a single melody note together and then one right after the other, congrats! you have done two part play. ( that is interdependence - the notes together, and independence- the two notes right after each other - no kidding) It doesn't have to be this hand "dududuuddududuud" going in a one direction and the other hand "dududududududuud' going in a different direction both in two different time signatures 27/9 and 2/4 cut time at 225 bpm! i have always said you can drive a car, but you don't have to [nor maybe don't ever want to] compete at NASCAR! But you still enjoy driving and its gets you where you want to go. Same with your playing. Just like going off the high dive, you just have to do it once to be rid of your fears ( of success, of achievement ???) Play a very random bass line in your left hand, could be two notes or part of scale, but just play random say in C. Don't think "does this sound good or make sense in this blah blah context"?. Just play. Then play a c note in your right hand -even and on the beat, so 4 c's like you are keeping time using the note as a metronome. When you are ready, like grabbing a carosel to hop on when it is running, then play 2 notes a c to an d and mix it up all while your Right hand is roaming around on the bass side. play two c's then play a long d to a short c, or play 3 ddd's- c. Congrats you have "broken through the wall" and now can play independent parts. This is the start DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF to any players who have been playing way longer and have DVD's and Instruction books out AT THIS POINT. We all started somewhere and you just did. hope this helps, and look in the mirror and say "I play two parts!" , don't forget to vote! Dave B "DBro"
