Follow up: I sent a text back to that guy telling him I owe him an apology and asking if I could call him tomorrow to do so.

Regardless, you really are a great person.

I'd do that gig for a hundred bucks, if I lived in town. Just to get out and get paid......and I'd pin the 100 to my whiteboard as the first cent I made playing the Stick.........but ya thats super cheap for a cat thats asking for a nights entertainment. He's asking for 3 sets for the price of one IMHO.

That being said, I'd play for free (I have a day job) just for the experience but wouldn't tell a bar owner that.

cheers,
k

I've been playing drums in a 5 PC Americana band for 5 years (until recently, but that's another story!). I've played gigs where we split that amount 5 ways lol! Sometimes you go with the flow, depending on the venue, the owner, your desire to get more exposure, and how you feel about playing. 99% of us will never make enough to do this for a living. So it has to be what you want to do for fun. If we actually get paid, more than the cost for gas, parking, drinks, food, and "breakage" (drum sticks, skins, guitar strings) so much the better!
If I ever get a setlist that contains more than 5 songs that I can play without hesitation and mistakes galore, I'd take that gig, just for the fun of playing live. If I was local of course :D

Part of my reaction was a lack of understanding of the venue and its size. Apparently it's a very small coffee house-cum-deli. They only get solo musicians (typically guitarists) in there. $100 is still quite cheap for a Sunday brunch, but the venue isn't big.
I got a text back from the guy saying "no apology necessary" but when I get a chance I'm still going to call him.

I'd also like to be paid 100 US dollars for a gig...it's so tough here in Québec to get more than that...and with the exchange that means about 130$ canadian...well...I'd love to do it...if it's not too far from where I live of course.

Good on ya Luc! You are going out of your way to make amends, that's so very nice, not surprising considering your nature.
Smallish coffee house cum deli, yeah a hundred bucks is a lot for them. If it was a bar, pub, etc., and you could tell the guy was just trying to rip you off, that's another story. This one sounds legit.

One thing you could do to top up the amount is have a tipjar or what we call a voluntary cover charge. I've played a place where the owner pays a couple hundred for the band ( and for a six piece that's not much )and sometimes the voluntary cover was more than what the owner paid. Last time we played we all walked away with 100 bucks. I doubt the owner would object and if the crowd really likes what you did they will contribute.

For us in the US, that doesn't hit until April 14, when we have to file Federal and State income taxes for the entire previous year.
:D
