Hey Steve, thanks for posting this - perfect timing. Steve Osburn has had group guitar lessons going every week for the last couple of years that I've been participating in ever since he started. He normally teaches the less experienced and and has another teacher for the rest of us. Last night we had a teacher who made use of the thumb quite often, as Oz Noy appears to be doing - which justifies a lower guitar position. I wear mine higher as I do a lot of fingerpicking on my electric, but don't often use the thumb as much as I do on the bass.

This vid's got me thinking I need a guitar player equivalent of Greg Howard that can read my guitar's position. Lately I've been experimenting with more open chord voicings, the thumb could be quite useful for that. Don't see myself holding a guitar that level to the ground, but perhaps some middle ground could be achieved. With the NS Stick I don't have any issues as the small body allows more freedom.

Thanks for the hint, I'm enjoying this music! Makes me thing about The Meters. Yes, interesting to see someone use the thumb for guitar chords. I've been admiring the Hendrix style chord thumbing but unfortunately my thumbs are not long enough for that. And guitars with thin necks doesn't tend to sound as good as the fat-necks.
