So those gauges are for a regular 10 string Stick, correct? What would be appropriate for a Railboard?

Same strings for both; no difference. That's why I got two sets: one for the Rosewood and one for the Railboard (or a spare, if I want to keep one Stick tuned in 5ths). But honestly, I think I'm ready to convert the Railboard over as well!

Good to know - I've sent an email to Cambria asking about the bass side strings. :)

$35 a pack (bass side only) and I got two sets. I think the mirrored 4ths and I are going to get along famously. Or infamously. It could go either way. But we shall be getting it on, yes sir.

Jayesskerr, Eric the Gray, Kris, Rob Martino, the Paigan, Mad Monk, ArmyDoc, and about 12 people I'm leaving out and another 23 people I haven't met yet....but there's quite a few of us getting into the mirrored 4ths now.

And as has been pointed out to me, people rage quit or give up on Stick all the time. It's not an easy instrument to just pick up and play. But perhaps if more people knew of mirrored 4ths as an option, more people might Stick With It. Personally, the fourths (straight and mirrored) have seen me grow by leaps and bounds in terms of my fretboard knowledge. I can play two handed simultaneous lines now with comparative ease.

And I guess I'm either not good enough or not jazzy enough to miss the range that the fifths on the bass side gave me. That's a 5-string bass now on the "bass" side, starting in D. Me likey a lot!

Your mileage will vary. This Paigan is neither Priest nor Missionary. Your undying and imaginary soul, and your tuning, is yours to do with as you'd like.

But mirrored and straight fourths are an option, and perhaps one that people might try before rage quitting their Sticks.

Oh, and all the cool kids (Paigan, Kris, Jayesskerr) have Blue Railboards tuned in mirrored 4ths! And it sounds like willowhaus will be using the Fourths! (Blue Railboard....what color was yours, by the way? )

Feel the Power of the Dark Side of the Fourths!

The good news is this; The audience doesn't care how you are tuned, what they care about is if you sound good...

5ths is cool, and the folks who employ it are awesome, I have tons of respect for their playing ability as well as the effort invested in learning that tuning. If it works for you, and you enjoy it, then that is great! 5ths was not a pleasant experience for me, although there are some things about it that I really liked. Some folks doing some crazy stuff with 5ths in the bass...

Me personally, I needed a tuning that was a bit more in line with my own musical vision, and was conducive to being able to leverage previous practice, schooling and experience (even if it was on another instrument) . It just didn't make sense for me to struggle with one tuning, when another wouId be more efficient and fulfill my requirements. I had to use what works for me.
Of all the 5ths tunings, I really liked MR/RMR I tried them all, every tuning has all of the notes so theoretically there is nothing one can't play...

Mirrored 4ths for this cat!

Reading this thread, I'm just wondering how you crossed fourths folks manage to get space between the hands? MR achieves this and gives the note position matching between sides. Are those things possible in mirrored 4ths somehow?

On a related subject, is there a 4ths tuning with a shared low bass string in the middle? I always liked the idea of DBR but wondered if there was a higher version, or a 4ths version?

An opinion or two...

Space between the strings is no problem at all; I kind of keep a pretty consistent spacing for practice and play; for instance in Amin I will play with LH at 5th position, and RH at 10th pos both playing the exact same scale fingering (A Aeolian mode, or Nat min fingering) only "mirrored" if that makes any sense? If a "hand crash" is eminent, I can always move towards the headstock on other strings on the bass side, or move higher up on the melody side to get the notes I need and avoid hand conflict. I tried to keep that kind of spacing in MR and Classic although the 5ths tuning on the bass side keeps a hand moving around a bunch... Keeping in mind of course, that that is just my experience; Some might disagree...

Also, I have been "sharing" the bass side strings quite a bit lately with the melody side when I play stuff, but you can do that in any tuning. Just mess around, I think you will find some cool stuff going on in any of the tunings.... (Again, just my opinion)

Rob Martino has a whole slew of videos with some really cool music using mirrored 4ths. I am of the opinion that Rob's music is totally excellent!

A player who is skilled with the 3-fingered technique can navigate 4ths in both hands with ease. This means position-shifting is as natural as anything else. If you're not trying to play chords in the bass 4ths, then you can stay very close to the nut. just about all of the time... You would probably not need to go above fret number 7 in the left hand... ever...

Uh-oh, I have been working like the devil to play all of those notes everywhere on the neck... High notes on the bass side and low notes on the melody side, lots of single string work and position shifting. Gonna get me in trouble yet... :D

Your point is taken. I was just responding to the question about hand collisions. cheers!

No offence intended fella... it's just that I paid for all of those notes so I intend to play them... most definitely past the 7th fret, and chords wherever the heck I want. Y'know, in the spirit of "unlimited creativity" and all... (It's why I bought a Stick...) So yeah, just answering for myself - other players may find that what you stated is perfectly suitable for what they want to achieve, and that's cool. I respect that, and the aspect of the reply that applies to hand collisions!

Cheers!
