Among the instruments I've been working with, I have an Ableton Push 2 controller which I enjoy quite a bit. One of the things I've been working on - and admittedly, it's what got me to buy a Stick again - is finger drumming. There's another piece of software that I came across, called Melodics - it's a finger drumming tutor, essentially (subscription model, but they do offer a few things for free) that trains you how to play drum patterns on tap pads (it works with a number of controllers, not just the Push).

I've found this really useful in helping to develop a lot of the basic skills you'd associate with Stick playing: two-hand (and fingering) independence, tapping muscles, and timing - the timing can be somewhat maddening actually, because as you progress the 'slop' factor gets tighter and tighter, and if you're a perfectionist it can be a challenge... :D

I've been doing this a lot on the Bass side of the Stick.

I drum with my left hand and drape my smallest finger along the same string at different positions. I'm getting really good at making all sorts of unusual sounds depending on how lightly I touch the string with my right hand. The sounds can range from bongos to funky harmonics.

I've wanted to find a finger drummer to do gigs with...

Me on the NS/Stick and someone finger drumming on pads. Super light load in and easy set up. Loading and tearing down real drums is a real pain in the ass!

Here is another David Haynes video that I like. I have this video set to play at the 2:41
point so that you can hear what he is doing a little better when he is soloing.

If you look at what he is playing and think, 'well, I could do that'. You would be correct, but it is not as easy as it looks...

The MPC Live is a very cool sampler drum machine for finger drumming 8-).

Finger drumming is really cool, and it's a lot of fun to be sure but after spending a bit of time with the Stick, I have come to the conclusion that there is no substitute for knuckling down, and learning the Stick. Practicing the Stick is easily THE most efficient way to learn the Stick in my opinion...
And no, I am not saying that "finger drumming" is a bad thing to do, those of us who create our own music have been doing it for decades (I use a Boss DR 800, or any keyboard, or a full midi kit, or real drums myself...) :D

Another opinion... Shortcuts like focusing on geometry (recurring shapes) are handy, but at the end of the day I have found that the biggest lunges forward in playing ability on the Stick occur when one learns the notes with the intent of personalizing it as opposed to just mimicry. In short, I think that "the hard way " is probably the easiest way.

Tangible things one could do to get better at the Stick;

1) The Free Hands Book. Greg's Stick Book and Song Book. Stickology. Study them.
2) The DVD's by Bob, Greg, and Steve. Study them.
3) Simple sight-reading. (This really, really, really helped my playing out more than anything else)
4) Make up your own stuff, videotape and record it. Share with anyone who will listen and pay attention to the feedback.

Here are a few others...

My best way of learning, is to play with my eyes closed.
I take the time to listen to the notes
and then work on creating my own tunes.

(End of t.v. add. Practice is fun for me. Even when I'm struggling it's rewarding, exhilerating, and FUN.)

I love practicing and studying, love, love, love it.

Never said it was a substitute, just an augmentation. (This is the "Alternatives" forum...) It takes a lot of control to do finger drumming well, and I don't think it's time wasted as far as helping to develop Stick skills, but YMMV.
