Post Free Hands Friday #82: SONG LEARN Sounds of Silence
Hi Stick friends, we are in for a treat this Friday as we welcome Boaz Bar Levy in for a good old fashioned SONGLEARN! This session, Free Hands Friday #82, will feature Boaz's arrangement of the Paul Simon classic, Sounds of Silence.

If you know Boaz, you know he is anything BUT silent about the Chapman Stick. He's pretty much a walking, talking encyclopedia of Stick knowledge and he understands pedals. Seriously, it's a little sick, but we love it. Yay pedals...

We'll talk pedals another day though. We'll be working in our new live 15 minute format with just Boaz and I to keep things on task and on topic. Boaz has been very supportive of FHA / FHF events, so it is a real pleasure to get a few minutes of time with him and this tune - which fits nicely in any live set. Thanks in advance for your time Boaz, I look forward to checking on Friday. :D

Great idea & news, I'll be in transit when it happens but can watch later. Well deserved by Boaz. :)

Hey!
I've been away from the Stick matters for a while, but I'd like to join this Friday. What is the time frame? Can't see it in the announcement, or am I missing something...

Hi Vlad, it's great to hear from you. I can't wait to get caught up with you and all that you are doing. I'm experimenting with a new format in that I am hoping to expose more Stickists to one another than I am of myself to the Stick community.

That being said, the new format is 15 minutes and limited to 2 Stickists. Perhaps you have a song that you have completed that you want to share? Let's find a date to do that.

Also, I am planning an old school Free Hands Friday for the month of September, kinda of a back to school edition. September offers a great opportunity to wrap up those new year's resolutions, so we'll share what we're working on and what we're planning to have done by the end of the year. If you have a Friday in September, shout it out and we'll make it happen.

Great news. I can't wait to learn this tune and catch up on what's going on with the two of you. I'm excited to see how the new format works. It's a great idea focusing on just two people.

Not sure on the time (did you say?), but if I can't make the live version i will catch the replay for sure! I do this song, and I'm interested in how Boaz approaches it. Nice to hear FHF will be back, "See you in September"!

So glad to see any form of free hands Friday back! Been missing it. Since before even ordering my stick I was watching them. Been almost a year now getting to know this new instrument and still love seeing and hearing everyone's thoughts and ideas.

This was an informative and fun session. Big thanks to Boaz for taking time out to share a bit on Sounds of Silence. I marveled at how effortlessly he used his left hand.

He also shared a technique for the left hand I had never considered. He used his left pinky for major chords (two strings north and two frets east) with the third on top and the left ring finger for inor chords (two strings north and one fret east.

I appreciated seeing how he brought the piece to life with additional effects (beat buddy, sy-300) for the second and third verses.

Again, tip of hat to Boaz for the inspiration. See you next Friday.
