Post FHF 87: I shot the Sheriff
With JOSH GOLDBERG!!!!

Image

What a treat it was get a few minutes with Josh Goldberg to learn Bob Marley & the Wailers I shot the Sheriff. As usual, we gave ourselves about 15 minutes to talk through the different parts and pieces of the song.

We've seen this piece in G all over the internet, but we're digging it in A. The piece has two main parts with a simple pentatonic minor turn around. That's it. The rest is hitting that grove and getting the melody to swing over the steady left hand motor.

Josh does it so well! Be sure to drop him a fiver every month over on Patreon to get access to tabs, charts, Stick tricks and be sure to share your feedback with him as part of his immersive musical program.

Thanks so much for making time for us and have an excellent Free Hands Friday.

Gene thanks so much for having me on, it's always a blast to work with you and chat!

Attached are the tabs for my rendition of the tune in a few different tunings. Each of these songs and instructional videos I've been putting out come with tabs like these, exercise sheets, performances breakdowns and more over at http://www.patreon.com/jgoldbergmusic and this little experiment has been one of the best times of my life. I hope you find these tabs helpful and if you want more, or are just curious, give the link above a look.

Thanks again Gene!

Gene,, would love to have you do a FHF of the Peter Gabriel tune you did a while back, "Mercy Street". Herbie Hancock does a beautiful rendition of this on his "New Standards" LP

Thanks for the cool FHF! Love Josh's sheriff. Here's a pinch of another version at the scuba diving club.

Josh's version is really cool, and it was fun to watch this but it felt really, really rushed heh
Gene is like "hurry up, dammit! The clock is ticking!" :D I would have watched it if it were an hour long, but then again...

Really cool, guys!

Lol. Josh is like every other Stickist I've met (myself included). We LOVE to talk about the Stick, but we also like to talk about DISCOVERY and INSPIRATION.

It's going to be pretty hard to top Oli's version on a boat - A BOAT I say!!!!

I'm hoping the new format is working. It does not leave a lot of time for creative thought, just a few minutes out of the week for inspiration and discovery (sparing you the yelling this time).

@Randy - Mercy Street is one of my favorites. It turned me on to Anne Sexton for sure. I've read online about some of the controversy of what is and what is not imagined in Anne's life, hard to say one way or the either without further investigation.

My arrangement is not a true replica of the original, but my interpretation. It's in C# minor (a half key south of the saddest of all keys), which plays really nicely with E major, so guitarists and bassists can rejoice in open string delight.

The very first FHF featured a review of this tune. There is a lot of chatter with Vic, Rob, Andy, Kevin and David hosting. It is the only video on the geneperry channel, as opposed to the FHA channel. Still hoping Kevin-C is going to sit us down with Mad World or Just the way you are!
