Post Fun very very local gig last night
So last night I played at a local bar/restaurant, right down the road from our house in the country. The scene was what you might expect.... mostly blue collar folks hanging out playing pool, eating, drinking, etc.

An old friend who also lives out here had arranged this for me, and thinking it might be a fun challenge I took it, and wondered how the locals would take my music.

Starting off with "Walking on the Moon", I played every cover I could think of that might resonate, and indeed, after Zeppelin, Santana, Beatles, U2, Bob Marley, Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, The Who, and many others I found myself trying out several tunes I'd never played before but that I knew would go over, even if I just got the main hooks across, like "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers, "Money" by Pink Floyd, "Brown Eyed Girl" by van Morrison, "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkel, etc...

The reaction was great, and I got some good requests for next time... I even played a few of my funkier and bluesier originals...

But it really made my night when I guy I sort f recognized came up to me and showed me a picture on his phone that he had from 1998 (not taken on his phone obviously) of him standing with Leroi Moore from the Dave Matthews Band, at the bar at Miller's. The photo was from the night I recorded Water on the Moon.

That's life in a small town! Now I just gotta learn some Skynnard and some Ray Charles...

Hi Greg. Sounds like you had a fun evening. Small towns are in need of some musical adventure once in a while and it seems you supplied some. I have often preferred hearing you play original tunes but I think you have chosen some "off the beaten path" covers to play that sound awesome on the Stick. Speaking of Ray Charles, I have been working on "Georgia on my mind"(not by Ray C. but made famous by him). I would love to hear you do a version of that song someday.

Mike

It's fun to read your musical experience. I had the same situation Friday night...a small bar close to my place...but I was playing cello with a guitar player. This guy has a large repertoire and I was improvising/making direct arrangement (sort of) on the songs he was playing. I made some Facebook invitations and people came a lot...it was magic. This repertoire was made of songs from Shawn Phillips, Ray Charles, Neil Young, The Eagles, The Beatles, J.C. Fogerty, Eric Clapton, Sting, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Kansas, David Bowie, Al Stewart, Loggins and Messina, Moody Blues, The Police, Chris Isaac, Guess Who, America, Seals and Crofts and more...lol. I rarely play covers but it's something I enjoyed a lot on cello.

It just goes to show you that often times, there is more opportunity than one might realize, and it's closer than you think. Gotta create your own reality sometimes, eh? Everybody likes music, especially when it's played by people as talented as you!

Sounds like you had a good time, Greg.

I played out last night and too, as a guitarist though. Got paid, had fun, met some people.

Pretty soon I will be ready to do that with the Stick... I gots a plan...

Great stuff, Greg. Hope you can do it again- sounds like it was a pretty chilled out environment. Lots of appeal there.

Good for you, Greg, for digging deep and pulling out every rocking tune you could!

As funny as the clip and the movie was, the lesson I learned from the Blues Brothers, is Be Flexible! Maybe you're a Blues Band, but there's some songs that are universal. Or fake it until you make it!

As Scott said, everybody loves good music!

I love those stories Greg. Getting it across to anyone who cares to listen and especially your locals. That's how I feel about it a lot of the time living in Hobart. I get out of town sometimes but making connections with your locals, that's where it's at.

Thanks for sharing.
