Post OK, going to give the darkside a try
SE just delivered (in like a day!) a set of medium M4 strings

I appreciate the idea behind the 4th/5th tuning and I can see
how it could open up a lot of harmonic territory.
and the fact that it makes me think differently is neat.

but going to try another way

WHY?
well, I could wax poetic as I tend to do, but to put it simply, I'd like to borrow the words of famed dodgeball coach Patches O'Houlihan

Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine? No, but I do it anyway because it's sterile and I like the taste.

Well, maybe don't drink anyone's urine? For at least a little while?

i'd rather have urine trouble than trouble urining.

Either way, you're in trouble.

Any news on how you are making out with the tuning? Lol I am not interested in your urination issues haha but how is the playing coming along?

well, so much for your membership in the online fetish community - turn in your furry suit and ball gag.

it's been going well-ish

i turned fiddy so my wife took my for a little diving (yes, I know I know I do the same thing on vacation as I do for work - I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed)

and i came off my bicycle so the left hand is out of commission for a bit (so the right hand is pretty much jut the same bu maybe I should have it on the bass)

so practice has been slow

but good. I think the tipping point was Mr Chapman describing his relation to the accordion - you know how it's kind of a homophonic instrument with harmonic left hand system.
and, well, I come from (and hope to rebuild) a contrpunctual approach.
I cut my teeth on Carcassi (is Noad still the thing in school? I was just prior to that...I missed the "soccer revolution" by a few years too"

I thought the Carcassi method was kind of neat in that, yes the lessons sort of illustrated things with sort of chordshapes (specific voicings) as anchors an used a "chords with modifications" (like you'd start altering the inner voices) to walk to the next chordshape anchor. So it sort of 'boiled the frog' in terms of starting that way and increasing complexity to get one into full counterpoint (that's not to say there werent exercises to punctuate the melodic nature of the voices, gosh like early on. I want to say melodic study 2 and 6 for example used a lot of oblique motion to frame that)

I guess that's something I missed and listening to Mr Martino kind of brings that back (yes, I'm sure if I had ultimate facility, i could do that with the asymetry...or rather harmonic symmetry of 4ths/5th as Mr Howard or Mr Culbertson do -- but I doubt I will achieve that)

I mean the homophonic thing isn't unique to this. It's performance gripe both myself and mymom in law (pipe oranist) have with some readings of fugue where the organist reads "vertically" a chords and they don't get good melodic separation really showcasing the fugue

I'm also enjoying doing some little motif, being able to replicate that in the other hand and then riff off that - manual looping kinda sorta?

I suppose some stumbling blocks are my left hand, in fifths has little facility (a little violincello in school) so it. my hand, didn't really notice as it was on an alien landscape.
but in fourths theres enough of a motor memory where it wants to play non-inverted. I dont intend to switch to a parallel arrangement. I think the mirrored ergonomics has a lot of validity
and one think I'm trying to get out of it is new thinking (or balancing new thinking with what little I have remaining from my previous life experiences)
I still have to let go of some guitarism

There's definitely a lot of potential for intermodulation mud, I get that, nature of the beast, but playing more linearly I suppose it's about navigating that, just part of the deal

despite the above (hey it's not *this to exclusion of that*, it's music) I'd still like to hear about chordal voicing and fingering strategies
in terms of actual hand mechanics

So overall, I'm having a great time - albeit a stick-interrupted at the moment
