But- there is a looper that I think is really amazing and that is the Boss RC 505. it slices, dices, reverses and has five tracks . Each track can be independent or synched. Also each track can be set to different bar lengths so short tracks or long tracks or in between. And you can save 99 5 track songs. The down side for guitarists or Stickists is that it is a desk-top tool made for beatboxers. Not really a problem though, you can get used to that and come to prefer the ease of use via the fingers instead of toes ...
That sounds like what I want (he says, for the 12th time!) Okay 3 awesome looper threads, a lot of gear recs, and even better videos, and I have no idea what to get. I think I'll just plunge in and get something.

BOTTOM LINE GENTLEMEN/LADIES:

I have $300-500 in my pocket. I want stereo loops. What do you recommend?

And I'll go as high as $700--but only if you throw in a full effects package and a foot pedal for expression. And MIDI. Can a $700 device handle effects, controllers, and looping?

(And if there's a good $1000 price point that is really worth it, let me know, and I'll break out that Sweetwater 2 years no interest credit card that should really be reserved for the LinnStrument I want to get, but I'd like a looper even more!)

Roland RC300 or the EHX 45000.

Roland RC300 is pretty damn self contained, has a lot of goodies in it... and well within your price range.

Thank you sir! We who are about to rock a loop, salute you! Of course, differing opinions to the RC300 always welcome (at least to me! I'm too ignorant to be opinionated for a change!)

"This is a high-end loopstation...perfect for multi-instrumentalists..." and rocks out with it.

Sold!!!! This is exactly what I didn't know I needed until I saw it in action up close. Gonna keep looking and getting a good gear-ache on.

This was entertaining from the BOSS website about the RC-300. This guy is feeling this with his whole body. Vastly entertained!

I recently sold my Boomerand IIII, too big and I didn't want to invest the time. I've also had Pigtronix Infinity - same deal. Adding looping to your rig is like adding another WAY of playing. You are going to need to devote time to practicing with it, it is a commitment.

The Boomerang is big, but you can add up to 3 loops. It's true stereo too, so if you run bass and melody side into it, it's going to keep them separate. The infinity looper is unique in that you have separate ins and outs for 2 signal paths. It's as though it was made for a Stick player. These means you could play a part in both hands NS capture just the melody OR bass part in a loop.

Something also to consider is what you can do with the loop - add 8 measure parts over 4 bar loops, slowly fade out loops, reverse it, pause it or layer it. Guys like Glenn are REALLY up on this and how to approach it AND make it sound musical.

I would start with something simple and inexpensive to get a feel for it.

This. Get a used Line6 DL-4 or a TC Electronics Ditto X2. That will give you some basic functions (loop, overdub, reverse, half-speed) that will leave you busy for the next few years if you use them creatively.

I'm subscribing to the philosophy that I can find a bass line I like, loop that and find a melody I like to go with it. Keeping my focus on creating and listening to the intertwining of lines rather than focusing on keeping a line in rhythm.

For this kind of practice I will notate the bassline and loop it in a MIDI player. I also use iReal Pro a lot which makes a bassline for me. I don't have any loopers so I guess this is my best option.

Wow, I just downloaded "iReal Pro", almost started a new thread but found this. This is an amazing tool with so many applications, Improv practice, chordal change practice, bass line ideas etc..

Also I just exported some drum midi files to my beat buddy! Too cool!

I love that app. The author is Massimo Biolcati, a top bass player who plays with Eldar. I've chatted with him a few times and he even wanted me to work on the app for him.

Here's a video of him.

I just put my Ditto X4 up for consignment at Oz's, plus 4 other items. Came back from the Sweetwater Gear Fest with a new Roland synth and an Eventide H9. So far I've been happy with the looper in the Helix. Anything to do longer I can now record audio files and play back with the synth. Bought the H9 as a small two channel clean interface for my PA's for when I don't want a big effects box like the Helix - the EQ Compressor algorithm does some amazing things with the NS. I can also download a looper for that if I wish, but it doesn't sound as good as other dedicated loopers. Going the "less is more" route. I don't want additional pedals hooked up to the Helix, would rather focus on coming up with songs. Also put up the C9 for consignment, no need to try and make my Stick sound like a synth, just bought a real one. Most of my logic is coming from what we just did with Oz's performances in Ypsi. Keep things simple, clean, good quality so everything can be moved at the drop of a hat when other groups play. Too many gadgets on stage an I lose focus on what I'm really supposed to be doing. I tend to find the same true at home, if I can't walk without tripping over too many pedals on the floor, then my focus goes elsewhere. Was happy to pull off a looped beat on stage last Thursday, that looper in the Helix works pretty well getting the timing right. I wish it could hold longer loops, but it isn't too bad, so I'll just stick with it (no pun intended) :) In the past I've had the X4 and a previous version of the large Boss looper fail on me in performances. The X4 was a board failure, TC fixed it afterwards.

I plan on using the H9 w/QSC K8 at the classes at Interlochen coming up in a few weeks.
