Re: Evolution of a Pedalboard
sorry for the late reply - had to do some xmas-hiding...

To not hijack this topic (it's very easy when it comes to discuss gear...), we should open a new one elsewhere, unless MM authorizes us to discuss pedalboard on his topic
hm - I think the evolving discussion about how to get a good tone signal through all these stomp-boxes definitely belongs to the "how large is your pedalboard"-thread, so let's take it to the next level...

MM, don't you have some tone loss issue with al that gear?
I've noticed some brightness and 'ooomph' loss when the signal comes through all my pedals, even if they are disengaged (and I've only a few compared to you), and it drives me crazy to lose the richness of the sound of the couple Stick/StepABout.
I had the same problem increasing with the size of my board. I did a lot of testing and experiments and came to some easy but effective solutions:
1) Use VERY GOOD cables to connect your effect. Try to keep the cables as short as possible. This reduces hum and keeps the loss of brightness to a minimum.
2) Use very good and suitable power packs. This reduces hum and noises due to unstable or low power supply of the effects.
3) Try not to cross power cables and audio-signal cables. This will reduce hum.
4) Use seperate power packs for each signal chain (bass, melody).
5) Do not use effects that add noise to the system unless you want them to. For example afaik all Boss effects do a high gain which is noise in my ears. Unfortunately a lot of the cheaper gear has poorly designed audio ins and outs or bad AD/DA converter. Expensive gear is anyway not an indicator of good sound.
6) Try to feed the effects with the right amount of gain. The Stick (especially the passive pickup equipped) tend to be too silent for most effects, so it is a good idea to use a preamp like the StepABout to gain the signal to an acceptable level first. This is also the ONLY acceptable position for EQ altering the signal. Every EQ modification after the effects tend to sound artificial.
To be discussed...
Happy New Year for all Stickists!
