For something really simple, the ART USB dual pre is great.

I bought it secondhand recently to use as a usb interface for recording to my Android tablet (works really well) but it has so many useful features. 9v battery power too. Phantom power for you Railboard users, XLR/TS inputs, etc. And the preamps actually sound good.
