Re: Best distortion sounds on The Stick
What a great subject. I'd like to hear opinions of the Moog MF Drive!
To my ears, many Stick tracks with distortion don't sound nearly subtle enough. I want a nice smooth blues crunch but that seems to evade the Stick? Would love to hear opinions and advice on this.

Re: Best distortion sounds on The Stick
From personal experience, I went through a lot of amps and pedals trying to find "that tone" when I had my ACTV2 Stick. In my case, and I tend to like a smooth overdrive a la Bonamassa, I really liked the Fulltone Plimsoul pedal. It has two stages, sort of simulating a preamp tube OD on one stage and a power valve distortion on the other, and you can blend them to taste. Still nothing sounded quite as good as the real valves on my Backstair and Carvin combos.

If that was a Blackstar HT series combo, then the preamp distortion came from a built-in distortion pedal—not a valve. If your Carvin was one of their Vintage combos, then its preamp distortion was created via diode clipping—not a valve.

Greg is literally the only guy I know who can make Metalzone sound good; Stick or otherwise. I like Steve's (Adelson) distorted tone quite a bit, but I think that in both his and Greg's articulate playing is what makes it sound awesome...
