Have you made videos demonstrating this with the melody side of your Stick(s)?

This clip features the melody and bass sides of a Stick through Fargen's version of a blackface Fender Showman. The overdrive is a Timmy, and there's a Shannon phaser on the clean part at the beginning. There's no guitar here, but I've played my guitar through the same amp.

You have excellent taste in gear, good sir.

I will check that out when I am better rested. For as hard as it is to believe that I have not logged in for a week, it becomes entirely believable when I consider my recent symptom spikes.

To my ears, many Stick tracks with distortion don't sound nearly subtle enough. I want a nice smooth blues crunch but that seems to evade the Stick? Would love to hear opinions and advice on this.

I too like subtle, nice and smooth blues crunch; a vocal-like tone without too much lower mid. Much like you get with a Fender STratocaster. When distorting only the melody side a subtle cut of lows is essential to avoid leakage of the bass strings stirring up mud in the clear waters. I have two tricks to achieve such a melody tone. First I like to set the PASV4 to "dual pickups out of phase" on the melody side, to get rid of the lows and have a little extra overtones to make the lines cut through what I'm playing on the bass side. I also generally use a low-cut filter before the melody side amp. Here's what that may sound like (distortion starting at three and a half minute into the track):

Here's another distortion piece using the same setup. This example is educational since it is recorded totally live, so you can clearly hear how (little) the bass side notes go into the dist of the melody side (entering dist mode on melody side by half the song):

When distorting both the melody and bass side I may go with just the neck pickups or bridge pickups (no need for low-cut there) but I have no recorded example of this.

(edit:)
To compare Stick vs Guitar, here's a Fender Stratocaster using about the same amp setup. This shows how a Stick "does not sound like a guitar" :-)

Joining the discussion rather late here, but...
Giancarlo's sound ... MAN!! If I could achieve that, I'd be thrilled. THAT'S the kind of distortion I like; pardon me if I get the terminology all wrong, but it sounds more tube-oriented rather than solid-state. Super ballsy.
Great player, too!

I will see if I can hook up an FHF with him.

Per, great advice. I really like your Astral piece - shades ofTangerine Dream. The variable repeat delay is great and the melody distortion through volume swell pedal is good too!

I still love the modeled Metal Zone (it's called "Killer Z") in my Line 6 PODX-3 Live. But the cool thing is I can "blend" effects by running either/and/or/both sides of the Stick thru different amp models (or same amp models) with the POD, something i've always loved about these all-in-one-box thingys. I love Giancarlo's sound AND playing. I believe he uses 7+5

Something I really enjoyed in the past with my POD X3 live is to use the Wah going into a Octave Fuzz and into my Plexi Sim.

Using the Wah you can get it very screamy like it's feedbacking...

I was on a quest to get the most annoying distortion sound so that it would cut through...

I like using the wah pedal in one position set to where I like the sound the most...
