I most often use a Retrospec Squeezebox on the bass side. A el opto tube compressor. Basically a LA-2A in a pedal. Fantastic. Multi band compressors are good often but a good el opto tube compressor does not need to be multi band. It has punch, is fast enough in all frequencies and add warmth.
I use the LA-2a in the Helix for my Grand. Don't have a real one to compare to, but the OCD OD I did have one, and the Helix was pretty close. Thanks for another option for the NS for a multiband application
The Line6 X3Live has a LA-2a compressor at the end and it sounded great. I used it on each side and never used it across the whole NS. But I can see (hear) it working well in giving some great sound.
The LA-2A is great at what it does but not too versatile. It either works great or it will not... it works great on many many things but when it doesn't it just doesn't...
I used to use a compressor at the beginning of my channel (a boss CS-1 style model) and the LA-2A type at the end of the chain after amp sims. The first compressor gave a great click/pop to the signal. The LA-2a gave fatness, heft, and smoothness.
Just my thoughts...
